Underpowered (not at least B tier in one role)

Yorick, Cho’Gath, Singed, Swain, Nasus, Kayle, Olaf, Shen, Dr. Mundo, Gnar, Ornn, Ryze, Tahm Kench, Volibear, Shyvana, Trundle, Rek’Sai, Zac, Gragas, Hecarim, Skarner, Sejuani, Diana, Syndra, Azir, Corki, Tristana, Xayah, Varus, Kalista, Lulu, Karma, Nautilus

Wow, the ranks of the underpowered have ballooned in just one patch, from 12 champions to 35 in the Patch 8.24(b) tier list. Not only does this include two champions – Corki and Trundle – who weren’t even good enough to make the tier list last patch, but 13 champions were ranked in the C or D tiers in multiple roles.

Also worth noting is the fact that every single one of the 12 champions who were considered underpowered in the 8.24 tier list are still considered to be underpowered in the Patch 8.24(b) tier list here. All of these champions – Azir, Corki, Gnar, Kalista, Nautilus, Ornn, Ryze, Sejuani, Skarner, Tahm Kench, and Volibear – are in desperate need of buffs. If you are a one-trick of any of these champions, maybe take a break from ranked for a bit.

Overpowered (at least A tier in multiple/all roles)

Jax, Camille, Lissandra, Lux, Vel’Koz, Zilean

A few champions fell out of the “OP” category – Rengar, Yasuo, and Irelia – despite getting no nerfs in Patch 8.24(b) or 8.24. The increased cost to Tiamat is likely a major culprit for Irelia’s drop, as it was one of her core items, and it very well might affect Rengar’s efficiency.

On the other hand, we have several new additions to the list including Lissandra, Vel’Koz, and Zilean. It’s interesting that the most cross-over of roles with OP champions has shifted from mid/top to mid/support, with these artillery mages becoming very prized despite no real changes to them or their core items.

Finally, it’s clear at this point that the nerfs to Jax and Camille in Patch 8.24 were not enough to knock them out of the top tiers in their major roles. Expect to see Riot touch them both in Patch 9.1 whenever that drops.

Best Champion in the Game

Lucian (ADC)

As noted above, Lucian is not only the best ADC, he’s the best by the biggest gap between any two champions in any role. Whether this is due to marksmen being weak as a role (it’s doubtful to me, since the entire top five in the bot lane are marksmen) or Lucian just synergizing so well with the early tower-taking meta, if you’re playing ranked and don’t plan to pick Lucian, he’s probably worth a ban.

Worst Champion in the Game

Corki (Mid/ADC)

The good news is that this ranking is no longer out of charity; Corki has earned the title as the worst champion in the game. The bad news is that’s because, although Trundle is now ranked and is the worst top-laner in the game, Corki has an average ranking lower than Trundles across two positions for both champions.

Despite the buffs to his ultimate rockets and LS’s prediction that Corki would gain prominence due to early-to-mid game tower taking still being important, I’d venture that Corki still needs love to drag him out of this weakened role.

Strongest Role

Mid

Mid was the second-strongest role last patch, and now that a few overpowered supports *cough* Pyke *cough* have fallen in line, the mid lane takes its rightful place as the carry role. With burst mages, assassins, and artillery mages all in the S and A tiers, there is a ton of diversity if you’d like to carry out of the middle lane.

Weakest Role

Jungle

For everybody crying that junglers are OP and have such a huge influence on the meta, and AD Carries are useless, I’d like to point out that for the second patch in a row the median the jungler role is weaker than the median ADC (meaning the results aren’t skewed by Lucian being the best champion, but the middle of the bell curve is moving). While ADC became overall a better position over the last patch, jungle remains underpowered. Perhaps Riot needs to give back a little bit of power on the gold and/or experience to camps, now that laners have so much more access to early gold in turret plating.
