The forge rises in Patch 9.1 as Ornn might be coming back to terrorize us top laners again. In addition to some base health and armor changes – which will help him survive lane – he’s now getting an additional 10% on resistances from items on his passive. That’s ridiculous as his armor growth is already increasing, meaning he might return to his earlier status as the premier tank.
Elsewhere on his passive, Ornn and his allies no longer have to pay to upgrade their items, but Ornn can upgrade them once per level starting at 13. Riot really seems to be pigeon-holing him to a late-game dominating tank, but the buffs to his early stats might make him oppressive at all phases. Finally, there are some new items that can be upgraded like Frozen Fist, Blade of the Ruined King, and Ludens Echo, which is nice for allies that were left out of a viable upgrade.
Ornn’s Q is getting its damage and slow lowered in Patch 9.1 to allow for him to spam it more with a lower mana cost, which might be significant given the changes to his W. Bellow’s Breath now ticks quicker over a shorter duration and the percent max health damage is increased at all ranks! That is a HUGE amount of extra damage to a champ that is getting buffed base stats and his W is now quicker to hit (harder to dodge). All of this comes at the expense of him no longer gaining a shield, but it’s honestly not a bad tradeoff for all those bonuses.
The E change is a nice quality of life fix, but Ornn’s ultimate is getting a slight nerf (thank God). The slow now scales up so he can’t instantly cast it to get the immediate 40% slow and the knockup is less for all targets (and is longest for the first) which should mean that in a front-to-back fight the carries will be getting knocked up for less time unless they’re out of position or Ornn gets a flank.
