2. Hauntzer (Golden Guardians)

Kevin “Hauntzer” Yarnell is the runner up on our list. When Hauntzer first joined TSM in 2016, many people had high hopes for the prospect top-laner and for good reason.

Hauntzer was able to help TSM make repeat worlds appearances in 2016 & 2017 and he looked to be solid in the top lane vs the world’s best in that role.

However, after failing to make Worlds in 2018, many shunned Hauntzer for his lackluster performance in playoffs and failure to perform on strong meta champions such as Aatrox. All eyes will be on Hauntzer to perform well in this upcoming Spring Split when he starts fresh with Golden Guardians, who have a revamped roster of their own.

1. Licorice (Cloud9)

The number one spot on the list of best NA top laners belongs to Cloud9’s Eric “Licorice” Ritchie. Many could argue that as a rookie in 2018, the top spot should go to a more seasoned veteran and not someone who was until last year; playing in the Challenger League

However, with sheer resilience and a determination to defy expectations, Licorice showed during the 2018 season that he is a formidable laner and a well-rounded team player. These traits, along with his performance last split more than qualifies him for the number one spot.

Narrowly missing the top rookie of the year honor, Licorice is coming off an amazing season. He helped Cloud9 reach a semi-finals appearance in Worlds 2018, the second-ever North American team to do so since TSM did during Season 1.

Licorice’s worst enemy will be the expectations surrounding him to perform well, along with the rest of C9 in the coming split. Hopefully, the success of his rookie season won’t go to his head and he’ll continue to do well in the top lane.
