4. Topsports (3-1)

The anti-EDG, Topsports has managed to beat the three teams that they were expected to beat – Victory Five, OMG, and LGD – and lost expectedly to Invictus. Even though it was a 0:2 series sweep, Topsports only dropped one other game this entire split to their second-toughest opponent in Victory Five. They’re going to have to face tougher competition on the other side of the break in JD Gaming and RNG, but so far this young squad (led by Knight, who is so far showing himself to be the best mid in the league) appears to be up to the challenge.

3. Suning (4-1)

The separation between the top three teams in the LPL power rankings is razor thin, and you could honestly flip these teams around any way you wanted and I wouldn’t argue. For myself, however, the determining factor is Suning has lost one series (FunPlus Phoenix has not) and has lost three games this season (Invictus only lost two).

But please don’t take this as a knock on the team, because they are scary good. Their bot lane of SwordArT and Smlz is unquestionably the best in China. As discussed yesterday H4cker is one of the best junglers in the LPL, and their solo laners are both solid even if they’re not exceptional. This is a good team, who has only lost to the unbeaten FunPlus Phoenix.

2. Invictus (4-1)

Heresy, I know, that the defending World Champions are not number one, but hear me out. First, of those top three teams, Invictus had the weakest schedule over the first three weeks, facing Topsports, JD Gaming, Snake, Rogue Warriors, and OMG. I know they only lost twice in those five series, but those two losses resulted in them dropping a series to a JD Gaming team that the numbers say they should have beaten.

1. FunPlus Phoenix (4-0)

It’s not just that this team is unbeaten, it’s who they have beaten and how they beat them. This team had to face Suning (as mentioned above) and JD Gaming, who had defeated Invictus.

Moreover, they swept JD Gaming and Rogue Warriors in their wins, and even though they dropped a game to Suning there’s no shame in that as they did emerge victoriously. Yes, they also dropped a game to Snake, which isn’t great. However, as we discussed, Snake is likely a better team than their record shows, so I’d suspect that loss won’t look so bad after a few more weeks.

As far as the roster goes, FunPlus Phoenix literally has no player outside the top five in his position, no player has a KDA below 3, and none has an average deaths per game above 2.75. They are an incredibly balanced team and are poised to continue to run over the LPL, facing WE and LGD in their first two games after the break. God help those poor souls.
