Team Vitality vs. G2 Esports: LEC match of the week preview
G2 Esports
Unrelenting, unwavering, unbeatable. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe G2 Esports’ start to the 2019 season and they’re showing no signs of slowing down. Schalke 04, SK Gaming, and Splyce have already felt the wrath of the unstoppable force, but G2’s next opponent may pose a credible threat to their undefeated run.
It’s difficult to pinpoint where this roster’s greatest strengths and weaknesses lie when they’ve yet to be challenged in the LEC this season. Their macro play is excellent and even when the rare wrong decision is made, they win team fights due to their vastly superior mechanics. However, one area that has looked questionable in recent weeks has been the early game, specifically in the bottom lane.
Recently we’ve watched excel Esports, SK Gaming, and Splyce take the game to G2 in the opening stages, leading to several deaths on both Luka “Perkz” Perković and Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle. This is definitely a dubious area for G2 Esports as Perkz, new to the marksman role, is yet to be tested by a top tier bottom lane so far this season. If a challenger wants to take down this invincible roster, maybe the bottom lane should be the target, but they’ll have to be at their very best to come out on top against this insanely strong G2 team.
One to Watch – Rasmus “Caps” Winther
Surprise, surprise! G2’s wunderkind in the middle lane is their key to victory. While the entire G2 line-up has been outstanding in their six victories so far this season, it would be unfair not to highlight Caps as their star player. Dominating his lane opponents and picking up three Player of the Game awards in the process, Caps has been the main instigator of his team’s success so far.
G2 signed Caps in the off-season to create a super-team revolving around the best player Europe has ever seen and their investment is already paying off. The Dane’s ability to single-handedly carry his team to the opponent’s Nexus is unparalleled and this was showcased in his performance on Akali in the second week when G2 snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Excel Esports.
The LEC Match of the Week sees Caps take on arguably his toughest opponent so far this split. Jiizuke burst onto the scene in 2018, picking up the Most Outstanding Rookie award in the EU LCS Spring Split and has come on leaps and bounds since, proving himself as one of the most talented mid laners in Europe.
This duel will undoubtedly be hyped up throughout Riot’s broadcast and rightly so. While Caps is the most likely candidate to take the reins in the mid lane on Friday, it will definitely be a fascinating match-up that could very well determine the outcome of the match.
LEC Match of the Week Prediction: Team Vitality Win
G2’s start to the split has been unbelievable, but not unbeatable. Excel Esports showed us that there are chinks in the armor of the 6-0 line-up, and if not for Caps’ exceptional outplays on Akali, perhaps there would be no undefeated team going into Week 4.
Team Vitality shine in the areas that G2 struggle. Proactive early game moves, persistent ganking, and an aggressive bottom lane could all be vital to unraveling the power of the LEC leaders.
Mowgli has demonstrated his early game jungle expertise in the majority of Vitality’s victories this season. Combine this with the energetic mid-lane monster Jiizuke, as well as a more than capable bottom lane duo, and Vitality have all the ingredients to take down the G2 beast in the LEC Match of the Week.
