LCK (South Korea):

SANDBOX Gaming

Perhaps no longer the underdog team, but SANDBOX Gaming has certainly made a name for themselves as some of the youngest competitors for the LCK title, along with teams like Griffin and Damwon Gaming. Being the only team to take a game off of Griffin; the strongest team in the world as well as killing the nigh-immortal Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon in-game, SANDBOX is only second to Griffin despite just emerging from the challenger series.

SANDBOX Gaming have a very pro-active playstyle, similar to most teams in the LPL and never seem to back away from any challenge, always opting to fight and play for kills rather than focus on their macro. Despite this straight-forward and messy playstyle, SANDBOX has found some decent success and the team’s synergy when looking for fights is definitely superior to other teams of the LCK. Led by Cho “Joker” Jae-up, SANDBOX’s superb communication makes up for their less incredible individual mechanics, proving that League of Legends is truly a team game.

Hanwha Life Esports

Another underdog team to watch in the LCK is Hanwha Life Esports. Currently, fourth in the standings, Hanwha is a pretty standard team, decent across all stages and factors in the game. They have never lost to a team lower than them in the standings, and have never won against a team higher than them in the standings either.

Despite this statistic, Hanwha is still a formidable opponent for the top teams, as their games against the three top teams have been closer than expected, considering the players they have, and with their convincing performances against these teams and their continued rapid improvement, it will not be long until Hanwha finally upsets the top teams as a team stronger than the sum of their parts.

LPL (China):

SinoDragon Gaming

Despite having only entered the LPL in 2019, SinoDragon Gaming is definitely a rookie underdog team to watch for in the Chinese league. While they haven’t yet faced big-name teams such as Invictus Gaming or RNG, they have done well against other average teams with convincing 2-0s wins. Their playstyle is reminiscent of RNG’s, in that they have their main carry player in Chen “Gala” Wei in the bot lane, and the rest of the team plays to support him, and this strategy seems to be working out pretty well for them so far.

Although currently 6th place (out of 16 teams), their real test will be on the 22nd of February when they take on 2018 world champions IG! Fingers crossed for Gala and the rest of SinoDragon to take down the reigning world champions!
