League of Legends champion profile: Lulu, the Fae Sorceress
By Josh Tyler
Ability Description
"Passive (Pix, Faerie Companion) – Lulu is assisted by Pix, a faerie, who fires a barrage of 3 bolts to her target every time she uses a basic attack against an enemy, dealing bonus magic damage with each bolt. The bolts can be blocked by units in the way of Lulu’s target. Casting Help, Pix! on an ally champion transfers Pix’s help to them for 6 seconds."
Lulu’s passive is a damage amp that comes with every basic attack on an enemy champion. Instead of just throwing one projectile out with her auto, Pix will throw out a line of three projectiles, which each do more damage based on your magic damage.
However, if you cast E – Help, Pix! on an ally champion or minion (giving them a shield) Pix will jump to that ally and add her three projectiles on to the shielded ally’s basic attacks. This is great to use for trading in an aggressive lane, where you can shield your carry to protect them from retaliation damage while also buffing up their damage.
"Q (Glitterlance) – Lulu and Pix each fire a magic bolt towards the target point, dealing magic damage to the first enemy they pass through, reduced to 70% against enemies thereafter, and slowing them by 80%, decaying over 2 seconds. If an enemy is hit by a second bolt from the same cast, they will either take no damage, or 30% damage depending upon if the first bolt had hit another unit before them. The second hit will refresh the slow."
A fairly straightforward ability at first-glance, it’s a straight-line skill shot. But it can be used in a lot of unique ways when used in conjunction with her Passive.
Since Pix will jump to the ally who has the shield on them and both Lulu and Pix fire the same line skill shot, you can use this ability to fire the skill from multiple angles. Depending on who you shield, you can potentially fire Glitterlance from multiple angles, potentially hitting multiple enemies or the same enemy multiple times to re-proc the slow.
"W (Whimsy) – ON ALLY CAST: Lulu casts erratic magic upon an ally champion, giving them bonus attack speed and bonus movement speed for the next few seconds. ON ENEMY CAST: Lulu launches a spell on the target enemy champion polymorphing them into a harmless critter, reducing their base movement speed by 60 for a short duration."
So Lulu’s Whimsy can be used in two different ways. The first, on ally cast, is fairly straightforward. It’s a good tool for escaping a chase by speeding up your ally or giving them attack speed in a skirmish. However, nine times out of ten, the better use is offensively on an enemy.
Casting Whimsy on an enemy polymorphs them for several seconds, which is one of the most annoying forms of crowd control in the game. While polymorphed, a player cannot attack or use spells. They can only walk around, but unfortunately, they will also be severely slowed during this time.
"E (Help, Pix!) – ON ALLY CAST: Lulu sends Pix, Faerie Companion Pix to the target ally, shielding them for 2.5 seconds if they are a champion. ON ENEMY CAST: Lulu sends Pix, Faerie Companion Pix to the target enemy, dealing magic damage and granting true sight of them for 4 seconds."
This is the ability we alluded to above, which shields an ally to grant them a shield and send Pix to them to do extra damage from her passive or redirect her Q – Glitterlance. However, there is also another use for the Help, Pix! ability.
If cast on an enemy it will deal damage and grant vision on them, which can be useful if you’re chasing an enemy into brush. Although this is nice to give a bit of extra damage, you’ll primarily be using this ability to shield your allies and get that damage boost on auto attacks.
"R (Wild Growth) – Lulu enlarges the target allied champion, knocking up units around them for 0.75 seconds, increasing their bonus health and causing them to slow nearby units for 7 seconds."
This is the “anti-assassin” ability. Lulu can give a massive health boost to any champion she targets with this ability, effectively negating any huge burst damage the enemy can fire out.
