LP gains

If you were a bit confused by that reasoning, let me elaborate. Riot has said that your rank and LP gains will vary based off where you finish in the standings in each game.

The top four in any match of Teamfight Tactics are going to gain LP, while the bottom four will lose LP. However, those at the high and low end of the spectrum will have their gains and losses amplified.

Finishing first will net a player more LP gains than the player who comes in second, but both of them will net more than the third-place finisher, who will in turn gain more than the fourth-place finisher. For losses, it will be the exact opposite, with players finishing last or in seventh place losing far more than the fifth place loser.

As stated above, players who have a low LP amount that fall behind might therefore elect to take a less-risky strategy and try to outlast one or two competitors, hoping that finishing in sixth or fifth place won’t lose them enough LP to be at risk of demotion. On the other hand, this system also creates a very strong incentive to play aggressively, as one victory would (presumably) grant enough LP to offset a several game streak of finishing in fifth or sixth place.

Thus, a player who feels confident that his loss won’t cause him to become in danger of demoting, will be more likely to sell his units, re-roll aggressively, and hopefully end up with a superior team comp to that he has already assembled. However, there could also be room for more conservative strategies, like just building teams with the goal of outlasting most of the other players via stronger established synergies and units.
