A New Era?

On July 17th, 2019, it was announced that Matthew “Deftly” Chen would be traded to C9 Academy, while C9 Academy AD Carry Keith would be traded to Golden Guardians. Deftly started 8 LCS games this split and every single game for Golden Guardians in Spring Split. Suddenly, Cloud9 has two LCS caliber AD Carries on their payroll, both equally eager to play LCS.

According to Oracle’s Elixer, Deftly playing for Golden Guardians and Sneaky for Cloud9 have very similar stats. Deftly has 3% less of his teams deaths and 18% more first blood participations, while Sneaky’s KDA is better by just 0.7. The players are very similar, but there is one clear advantage Deftly has that Sneaky can’t do anything about.

Deftly was a rookie player last season, only entering his sophomore season this year. It is clear that Deftly has a lot more to learn compared to Sneaky, who has been playing for Cloud9 for six separate seasons. Deftly is already as good as Sneaky at this point in time, and with that time to develop as a player and with all the potential he has, could he be the one to bring Cloud9 to the top?

So, I think it is time for Sneaky and Deftly to split time on the starting roster. This will allow Deftly to build synergy with the starting LCS roster, especially his support Zeyzal. When C9 or Sneaky himself decides that his time is up, Deftly will already be able to slot right into the roster, and there won’t be any blip in form as a result.

I believe that Deftly could be the man to lead C9 to finals, championships, and Worlds. It’ll only happen when Cloud9 give Deftly this opportunity.
