League of Legends: LEC Week 6 Power Rankings
5 Origen (5-5)
Yikes. It’s one step forward, one step back for Origen at the moment which leaves them in the awkward position of not moving at all, as proven by their troublesome 5-5 record after five weeks of the Summer Split. 13-5 is a good split, 5-13 is a bad split, anything in between is plain mediocre, especially for a team of Origen’s standing, Spring Split runners-up who were probably hoping for a chance of lifting the trophy in Athens this autumn.
Losing against G2 Esports, Fnatic, and Splyce you can forgive, they’re the best Europe has to offer at the moment, as painful as that may be for Origen fans to take. As for the defeats against Rogue and Team Vitality, they’re inexcusable if you want to challenge in the playoffs and reach Worlds.
OG need to regroup and refocus on what they were so accomplished at throughout the Spring Split, a slow, intelligent play style that led to an unstoppable late game macro machine. As it stands, Splyce are simply the “Better Origen” and look set to steal their spot at Worlds at the season’s conclusion. But there is still time for Origen to bring it back.
4 Schalke 04 (6-4)
Out of nowhere Schalke 04 have gone from mid-table fodder to just one win behind potential Worlds contenders, Splyce. On top of that, they’ll have the opportunity to overtake their closest rivals in the standings this Saturday as the two face-off in one of the most exciting match-ups of Week 6.
S04 have one of the cleanest early games in the league and are unmatched when it comes to teamfighting, mostly due to Korean jungler Trick and his multitude of tricks to navigate the first fifteen minutes and build a gold lead for his team. Having two of the most accomplished carries in the LEC no doubt helps with Abbedagge and Upset continuing to show their talents with consistent damage outputs and Player of the Game awards stacking up.
SK Gaming and Splyce lie in wait for the 2018 Summer Split runners-up, after which Schalke could find themselves challenging Fnatic and G2 at the top of the table, potentially stealing away the 3rd spot at Worlds at the end of the season.
3 Splyce (7-3)
The six-game winning streak finally came undone in Week 5 as Splyce fell to defending LEC champions G2 Esports in a close encounter. Despite being built up as a potential upset, G2 Esports once again showcased their incredible mechanical ability in the early game and nearly blew Splyce away in twenty minutes. Fortunately the blowout was denied by Splyce’s impressive play from behind, but ultimately there was only one winner in the 1st vs. 3rd clash.
All in all, Splyce are probably glad to get G2 out of the way so they can focus on eight very winnable games to close out the Summer Split. Playoffs is all but locked in, but the late-game kings will undoubtedly be hoping to snatch the 2nd place position from out of Fnatic’s hands and get a bye straight through to the finals in Athens.
2 Fnatic (8-2)
Two losses in the regular season and somehow still second, thus is the level of dominance and consistency shown by G2 Esports in 2019. Fnatic would be 9-1 if not for their questionable substitution in Week 5, swapping out Rekkles for MagiFelix’s LEC debut and putting Nemesis on a marksman in the bottom lane, leading to a shocking loss against Rogue.
Provided the seven-time European champions continue at their current pace, they look set to secure their place in second, reach Worlds by championship points and have a chance to achieve what they couldn’t last year, lifting the World Championship trophy. However, with the likes of Splyce, Schalke, and Origen closing behind, and G2 Esports continuing their domination of the LEC, it will be a tough ask.
Week 6 offers two winnable games against Misfits Gaming and Origen. Two victories could see Fnatic rise back to the top spot, but ultimately the team will probably be looking to secure 2nd as soon as possible to focus on playoff Bo5s.
1 G2 Esports (9-1)
Possibly the only dead cert on this power ranking, G2 Esports have recovered from their mid-split blip against Fnatic to build a 9-1 record heading into the home straight. Friday’s blistering decimation of Excel Esports was followed by a tight, but convincing victory over Splyce on Saturday to nail down G2’s fourth undefeated weekend of the split and cement a five-game winning streak.
It’s clear that, much like the Spring Split, G2 are relaxing and trying inventive champions and strategies throughout the regular season, opting to save their full effort for playoffs and Worlds, an approach that succeeded in Spring. It would come as no surprise if G2 Esports end the regular season with a 17-1 record, go on to defend their LEC title, and challenge the very best at Worlds in September and November.
