16. Unicorns of Love

Qualified via

LCL 2019 Summer Champion

Roster

Top – Vladislav “BOSS” Fomin
Jungle – Kirill “AHaHaCiK” Skvortsov
Mid – Lev “Nomanz” Yakshin
ADC – Nihat “Innaxe” Aliev
Support – Edward “Edward” Abgaryan

Path to the League of Legends World Championship

If you’re confused to see Unicorns of Love (UoL) on this list, considering they were rejected from a spot in the LEC when franchising took place, don’t worry you didn’t slip into an alternate reality. Instead, after the rejection UoL moved on to Russia’s LCL, buying a spot for the Summer Split from Team Just and acquiring three former members of Vega Squadron to comprise the top half of their roster. And if Vega Squadron sounds familiar, that’s because they were the team that stomped through the group stage of play-ins at MSI, preventing DetonatioN FocusMe from getting a shot at advancing to the main stage.

Rounding out the squad with former ExceL ADC substitute Innaxe and long-time EU LCS veteran support Edward, UoL finished second in the LCL’s Summer Split regular season with a 12-2 record, tied with perennial powerhouse Gambit Esports. However, in the LCL playoff finals, UoL was matched up against the remnants of Vega Squadron, who had defeated Gambit in five games in the semifinals. In a series that was closer than most expected, Unicorns of Love won the series 3-2 and clinched their first League of Legends World Championship appearance in franchise history.

Player to watch

Support Edward who was brought in to be the leading, veteran presence on this team and has served in that role incredibly well. He’s also had a major resurgence to his play after a few down years, harkening back to his Moscow Five and Gambit days.

Best case scenario

In my opinion, this is the non-one seed that actually has a strong chance to win their group (if they get the right draw) and win the knockout round. Best case is probably getting to the main event group stage and just playing spoiler, unfortunately.

Worst case scenario

Underperforming in play-in groups or getting a bad knockout draw and not advancing to the main stage.

Prediction

They’re making it through knockouts into the main event, but fade out in the group stage.
