How they got here
Cloud9 has been the perpetual bridesmaid of the LCS this year. They finished the Spring Split in third place after suffering a reverse sweep at the hands of TSM, then followed that up by finishing second in another five-game series loss in the summer finals at the hands of Team Liquid this time?
They advance to the World Championship thanks to their combined championship points thanks to those strong finishes in both spring and summer. Although they have not managed to defeat Liquid during TL’s current NA dynasty, Cloud9 has enjoyed the most success of any North American professional League of Legends team historically. Just last year C9 became the first NA team ever to make the semifinals at Worlds and will be looking to replicate that same magic this year.
Player to watch
It has to be jungler Svenskeren, the reigning LCS MVP. Svenskeren has been the rock of Cloud9 all year and helps elevate some of the weaker players on his team.
Best case scenario
They get an easy group draw and replicate that same magic from last year to make it all the way back to semifinals.
Worst case scenario
I honestly don’t think there’s a scenario where Cloud9 can’t make it out of the group stage unless they get the pure Group of Death. I think they match up really well across the top side of their roster and should be aiming to make it to quarterfinals, but they could easily get a tough matchup there and bow out.
Prediction
They make it to semifinals just like last year but come up short.
