Path to the League of Legends World Championship
You probably also remember DetonatioN FocusMe (DFM) from the MSI play-in rounds. Unlike the other teams that are making a repeat performance on the Worlds stage, DFM did not underperform at MSI and went 4-2 in the group stage. Unfortunately, they ran into a wall in the group stage by the name of Vega Squadron, who kept the upstart DFM from making it to the knockout round of the play-in stage.
But DFM was not deterred, went back to the LJL, and defended their title by finishing first in the regular split with a 17-4 record. Yes, it was a downturn from their 20-1 Spring Season, but DFM still looked like the team to beat going into playoffs. And they backed up this showing in the LJL Summer Finals by dispatching of the LJL’s number three seed, V3 Esports, in a 3-1 series.
Player to watch
It has to be support Gaeng, the only player not returning from the squad that couldn’t make it out of the play-in knockout round in 2018. Since coming over to DFM, Gaeng has been spectacular posting 76.6% kill participation and almost a 9 KDA over the course of the year.
Best case scenario
DFM finishes first in their group or gets an easy draw for the knockouts of play-ins and advances to the main event. Once, there, though they’re probably one of the teams the other three take for easy wins until DFM inevitably pulls one crazy upset.
Worst case scenario
Just like at Worlds last year, DFM makes it out of the group stage to the knock-out but can’t stand up to one of the heavy hitters from the major regions.
Prediction
They finish second in their group, get a decent draw for the knockout round, but ultimately are going home before the main event.
