Three reasons Team Liquid won’t win the World Championship
1. The other world powers
There are lots of good and great teams at this year’s Worlds. While Liquid is talented, is it enough against top teams from other regions outside of G2 and Invictus?
SKT 2-0’d Liquid during the MSI group stage and Fnatic beat them in the only matchup the two had at Rift Rivals. Even Cloud 9 and Clutch from North America can take Liquid despite not even being considered even close to the level of the favorites for this tournament.
There will also be interesting questions to see how FunPlus Phoenix, RNG, and Griffin match up against Liquid even though they haven’t played each other this season. I think one of these better teams will be Liquid’s demise in this event.
2. Bad draws
This might doom any team, but I have a feeling Liquid could get a bad draw. While, yes, they did get the “Group of Life” initially, there is still the chance that they will draw Korea’s third seed, Damwon, coming out of the play-ins. If Liquid ends up in a group with the defending World Champions (Invictus) and one of the rising young teams in the tournament (Damwon) they could be in trouble.
3. Upset alert
Team Liquid has the talent and is confident, however, maybe they border on being cocky. Doublelift is known to trash talk and is confident in his abilities. For the most part, he backs that up on the Rift, but their smooth sailing, especially given their easy draw in groups could be their undoing.
I could see this team being too cocky and lacking the right preparation for a lower caliber team. that may just led to an upset loss and an early trip home without a trophy. Liquid just needs to look at the current match at hand and avoid looking too far into the future. Yet I don’t think this team needs to be overly cautious it messes with them, but a bit of alert and proper respect for each challenger will go along way.
Team Liquid is a team that could surprise some people with their skill, or they could be the most underperforming one seed at the tournament. It all depends on which of the set of three reasons comes out in the end.
