Why DFM won’t win Worlds

1. No experience at winning

I did say that DFM has international experience, but I don’t feel as if it’s the most quality experience. This is the second year in a row they have to play in the play-in stage and, though they did get to the knockout round of play-ins last year, they didn’t look good in their 1-3 record in groups. They looked even worse during the 0-3 sweep to Edward Gaming in the knockout round.

Now MSI 2019 went better with the 4-2 record in groups, but it still wasn’t for DFM to actually advance in the tournament. Vega Squadron was one game better and got to advance to knockouts instead. If you can’t get to the main draw you can’t win an event and that’s just what DFM has failed to do before.

2. Tough play-in draw

DFM is in Group B of the play-in stage with Splyce and Isurus gaming. They’re a popular pick to finish second and advance to knockouts, but their real test could come in the knockout round.

There, DFM could get Damwon, Clutch, or Hong Kong Attitude if the favorites advance out of their groups. None of these draws would give DFM an easy task to advance to the main group round. Avoiding a possible match-up with Splyce is a small advantage, but I don’t think it matters much unless they can beat them in groups, which is unlikely.

Furthermore, they’ll also have to get past Isurus, which I don’t think is going to be an automatic win for DFM. It’s entirely possible they even finish third in their group and get sent home.

3. Not highly rated

DFM is a  regional champion, however, it is a minor region championship in a pretty top-heavy LJL. This didn’t help them in our rankings as they came in as the 17th best team at worlds.

This means our projection puts them just short of advancing to the main group draw if they perform as expected. Making a run from this spot will be a tough test as to how are they going to beat teams in the top ten or five if they are struggling to beat even middle-tier teams. They haven’t been doing too well in our individual player ranks by position either, which makes it even harder to see them matching up as a world-class team.

DFM is a team that would be a total shock to people to come out of nowhere to win worlds. If they get really lucky they possible could become the first LJL team to win it all.

The League of Legends World Championship begins on October 2 at 7:00 EST / 13:00 CEST.
