Why Cloud 9 won’t win

1. Tough group

Cloud9 was drawn into Group A for the main event group stage, which is not great news for NA fans. This is the same group as G2 and Griffin, rounded out by Hong Kong Attitude, joining this group following the play-in stage.

While C9 is probably favored over Hong Kong Attitude in this group, that still means they’ll have to top a tough Griffin or G2 squad if they want to make quarterfinals again. If Cloud 9 can’t solve either of those two teams or does get upset by Hong Kong Attitude, the season could be over faster than expected.

2. Bot lane

The weakest lane Cloud9 has is their bottom lane duo of Zachary “Sneaky” Scuderi support Tristan “Zeyzal” Stidam. Sneaky was rated our 19th best ADC at Worlds and was called the worst laning ADC in the tournament. Zeyzal was also named the 19th best player at this tournament in the support role.

This can’t be a good sign for a team trying to contend seriously for a title. The glaring weakness is in the bottom lane can and should be taken advantage of by other teams to win a lot of games against Cloud9.

3. Beyond groups

Even if they make it out of Group A, Cloud9 might have some trouble against other top-rated teams. FunPlus Phoenix, Fnatic, and SKT are both teams I could see besting Cloud9. In fact, Fnatic went 2-0 against them at the 2019 Rift Rivals. They were also the team to eliminate them last year in the semifinals of this tournament in a 3-0 sweep.

There’s plenty of talent in this tournament for Cloud9 to be afraid of. It’s just about which tournament favorite will they have to go head to head with if they can survive groups.

Cloud9 is a team to watch as they always seem to play their best League of Legends at worlds. It’s just a matter if their best will be enough to win it all in 2019?
