3.MSI rematch

SKT and G2 are familiar foes on the Rift. Most recently they did battle in the 2019 MSI  semifinals with G2 winning that series 3-2. They also had a pair of group stage games during MSI that also went the way of G2 to give them a 5-2 overall led in the head to head series for 2019.

However, SKT enters this matchup as the favorite, due to being a one seed out of groups, while G2 was a second seed. Yet at this point, the seeding really doesn’t matter and it’s going to be one exciting match either way.

4. LPL battle

On the other side of the bracket, two teams from the same region will do battle for a spot in the grand finals. This battle is the LPL’s Summer Split Champion FunPlus Phoenix and Spring Split Champion Invictus Gaming.

This is pretty much a battle royal to see who the ultimate LPL team is. FunPlus won the head to head match during the Spring Split, while Invictus took the had to head game during the Summer Split. They didn’t meet up during either splits playoffs, but each squad won an LPL title.

They also have never met on the Rift at Worlds. This match determines who will be the highest placing at Worlds and therefore the best team from the LPL in 2019. The winner also gets a trip to the grand finals, but the unofficial LPL Worlds crown is a nice prize and confidence builder heading into that match.

Invictus also wants to win this match to claim a chance to repeat as champions. Only SKT has done that in League of Legends history. The two teams could meet if each win during the semi-finals.  That would be an absolutely crazy matchup.

On the flip side, if G2 wins alongside an IG win, it would be a rematch of the semi-finals from Worlds 2018 and that would be a great matchup as well. IG’s title defense is still alive and it’s a storyline worth keeping an eye on.

5. Grand Slam

Not only does G2 have the weight of western teams and home-field advantage they have an opportunity to make history. They already won the 2019 MSI title, as well as taking both LEC split titles. If they can win two more series in this bracket they can win the Grand Slam of League of Legends.

It’s a tough task but this team is more than ready to challenge for it. I could see two of the remaining teams as roadblocks for G2 to accomplish the Grand Slam. SKT is favored in their semi-final tilt and could send G2 home a round before they would like, or they could lose a rematch of last year’s Worlds semi-finals to Invictus Gaming in the grand finals. G2 is capable of winning it all, but it won’t come easy to them.
