4. Who’s the best region?

Regions are often graded by how they perform at international tournaments. Well, this is the international tournament that says the most about the grade of each region.

In a future article, I’m going to look at how each region performed overall to see which region is the top one in 2019 to go alongside the World Championship team. Average finishing position is one of the things I’m keeping in mind as a guideline for picking the best team.

The LEC sent three teams into the quarterfinals, while the LPL only had two teams make quarterfinals. Yet the LPL had two teams in the semi-finals while G2 was the lone LEC team in that round. However, both have reached the finals and want to help themselves to the top spot and help their region finish in a better overall position.

FunPlus coming in first would help balance out an RNG team that failed to make the bracket stage but still show the LPL is the top region in the world. A G2 win would help make up for two teams from Europe that failed to make it past quarterfinals and give the LEC a better average finish rate, which will help in the standings for the best overall region.

The gap between the LPL and Europe is tight in this top region race and winning the first place crown would be the best thing to cement your region as the best. It would also be a head to head win, which would help in the records against other regions, which is another qualifier I look for in deciding which region is the best.

Europe and China both also have a past World title. The next win would give either region two World Championships which would place them as the region with the second most titles only behind Korea with five.  So not only would the winning region be the best in 2019, they can make a claim to being historically better than all but Korea.

5. Back to back for LPL

China has sent a team to the finals for the second year in a row, thanks to an all-LPL semi-final with Invictus and FunPlus Phoenix.  In that match, Invictus saw their title defense attempt end at the hands of the current LPL champions.

FunPlus has for sure shown they are the best team in China after that head to head win over Invictus in 2019 but wants to show they are the best in the world too. They want to keep the trophy in the LPL with a big win over the “home team” G2 and give the LPL back to back titles at Worlds 2019.
