Improving mechanics

26. Prevent yourself from going on auto-pilot.

This is a problem I have a lot of times in a game, where I will often let the “active” part of my brain shut down and default back to relying on my instincts and mechanics. You need to be actively thinking about what is happening in your game, constantly re-assessing the state of the game as it changes, and making a plan of action for the next 5, 15, 60, and 90 seconds. That all sounds incredibly mentally taxing…because it is.

One thing you can do is play a metronome in the background, so every few seconds you’re prompted to do something like look at the mini-map, click the Tab button to see the player’s scores, or just reset yourself to focus. You can play wordless music in the background, or regular music, depending on what focuses you. In either case, it’s important to have something that will keep you from losing focus in games.

27. Train mechanics!

Not enough people value mechanics enough in League of Legends, but being able to understand and execute your champion’s basic (and advanced) combos can help get you to Gold or Plat alone. Go on Youtube, look up guides for your champion, and focus specifically on the types of combos those guides talk about. Then, go into the practice tool and drill them constantly until they become second-nature so that this next tip is easier.

28. Always think through the steps of what your opponent is going to do in a fight.

Winning a 1v1 or small skirmish can be really hard for some players, but if you have the game knowledge to know what they are thinking you can win almost every single fight. The key is (and I know from experience this is hard) to not focus on what you want to do, but instead focus on what they want to do.

Think about your opponent’s big abilities, their high-damage and/or CC abilities. Think about how and when they want to use those abilities and play around that. Whether that means waiting to use your dash until Morgana throws out her Q or holding your shield until Darius Q’s you, try to think about what your opponent will try to do and counter it, rather than focusing on executing your damage combos.

29. Track flash always!

Flash is the most important Summoner Spell in League of Legends. You should always know if you have it up and if not when it will be up. On the other side, if you are fighting with someone you should know if they have it up. If you’re not sure, assume it is up and play accordingly.

30. Always use flash to dodge the CC.

This is a big one but easier said than done. You always want to use your flash to dodge the CC ability rather than escape afterward. If you get hit by the CC, you’re probably dead anyway, so don’t bother flashing.
