The 5 best mid laners in League of Legends on Patch 10.17 are all capable of solo killing their opposite number and spreading their advantage across the Rift through roams and ganks.

Although it was a relatively small patch, Patch 10.17 (or Patch 10.16b) still included some impactful mid lane changes.

Qiyana has found herself surprisingly high up the mid lane tier list recently which prompted the balance team to hit the Empress of the Elements with a nerf for both Terrashape and Audacity. League’s newest recruit, Yone, was also targeted for nerfs on Patch 10.17 in the form of a Mortal Steel damage reduction.

5) Galio

52.41% Win Rate | 5.6% Pick Rate | 3.3% Ban Rate

Strengths: Hero’s Entrance is an incredibly versatile ultimate ability with the potential to pull off unexpected roams or turn the tide of a team fight at the push of a button. When paired with a tanky champion at the center of a teamfight, such as Jarvan IV or Gnar, Galio can lock down multiple enemies with crowd control to kick off an advantageous skirmish.

Weaknesses: Unlike the other champions on this list, Galio struggles to 1v1 his opponents and can’t forge out a gold lead unassisted. As a result, the Colossus relies heavily on early skirmishes, particularly towards the bot lane, to pick up key items.

4) Katarina

Strengths: Katarina excels at individually creating a gold lead and spreading it across the map throughout the opening stages of the game. Solo kill opportunities are plentiful in the mid lane and her decent wave clear allows for frequent roams to either side lane.

Weaknesses: The Sinister Blade is extremely dependent on her ultimate ability, Death Lotus, to deal high DPS during teamfights. Therefore, when facing a team with a plethora of crowd control options, Katarina struggles to impact a fight and carry her team.

3) Fizz

Strengths: Across all 150 champions in League of Legends, Fizz is arguably the best at instantly killing an opponent and removing them from the Rift in the blink of an eye. Even from long-range, the Tidal Trickster can cast Chum the Waters, Playful Trickster, and Urchin Strike to blow up any squishy champion in less than a second.

Weaknesses: Fizz suffers from being extremely one-dimensional and predictable in teamfights which can often result in him failing to entre a skirmish completely. Often, opponents can simply guard and peel for their squishy carries, forcing Fizz to retreat or attempt to kill a tank with less than optimal tools.

2) Kassadin

50.92% Win Rate | 6.5% Pick Rate | 25.9% Ban Rate

Strengths: At level 16, Kassadin is the strongest champion in League of Legends and will consistently carry games even when piloted by newer players. A 2 second Riftwalk cooldown is more than enough to destroy opponents’ health bars and dominate a late game teamfight.

Weaknesses: Until level 11, Kassadin is one of the most vulnerable champions in League of Legends and will often be targeted and caught out by enemy junglers early in the game.

Strengths: Although he is primarily an assassin, Zed’s overall damage output is also incredibly impressive right now. The Master of Shadows can easily blow up a squishy opponent and then contribute to a fight afterward without being limited by cooldowns.

Weaknesses: If forced behind early on, Zed suffers more than most champions due to his reliance on an item lead to burst enemies’ health bars. It is vital that the mid laner picks up an early gold lead through solo killing his opponent or carving out intelligent roams.
