5. Jason “WildTurtle” Tran (CLG)

One of the longest-serving LCS players, WildTurtle has moved again last offseason from FlyQuest to CLG. Among a rather green ADC class in the LCS, Turtle stands out as a veteran who has been here before. And, strangely, he’s shown the old dog can learn new tricks.

After a bit of a down year in 2019, Turtle actually improved in 2020. Part of that is that he was paired with a superior support in Ignar, but most of WildTurtle’s major statistics trended upward.

First, and most impressively, he actually had the highest adjusted KDA of all the 2021 ADCs at 6.41. While he has a historic reputation as a borderline-reckless player, he actually averaged the fewest deaths per game (1.1) of ADCs in 2020.

Unfortunately, that did come at the expense of his damage output. He did 68.2 less damage per minute than the average player given his champion pool. That represents the lowest EDD in the ADC role.

Moreover, his laning was quite poor (-20.6 MAGXD @ 15) and that laning hindered his late game income. He had only a 427 gold per minute despite his solid KDA, largely due to the fact that he wasn’t taking advantage of his lane matchups.

Of course, while we caveat all Academy players by pointing out the low level of competition they face, we must also caveat Turtle’s improved performance in 2020 by pointing out his lane partner. He’s going to have to develop synergy all over again this year with an inferior support in Smoothie. It seems likely that Turtle’s performance will decline from what he showed last year.
