After a long hiatus, the VCS returns with the 2021 Winter Split

The Vietnamese Championship Series (VCS) is finally coming back after an extended exit from the pro scene due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To fans’ delight, they can look forward to their favorite Vietnamese franchises going head-to-head in what’s being called the VCS Winter Split.

The Winter Split competition is an extra split of competition that’ll take place following the end of the World Championships. The “split” will be structured as a double round-robin tournament with eight participating franchises. We’ll see GAM Esports, CERBERUS Esports, Saigon Buffalo, Team Secret, SBTC Esports, Burst The Sky Esports, Team Flash, and Luxury Esports go head to head till one team remains.

The action is set to kick off on Nov 16, they’ll play 6 days a week (Tuesday-Sunday) until we have a winner on Dec 31. We’ll end the year crowning the best Vietnamese team in the region. However, it’s unfortunate that they won’t be able to take part in the World’s action.

The COVID-19 pandemic really threw a wrench in the VCS for 2021. Since April there hasn’t been any action out of the Vietnamese region due to COVID restriction. It all started with their teams being unable to attend Worlds 2020 and ever since then it’s just gotten worse.

They were forced to cancel their Summer Split because of delays acquiring an event permit. Then because of issues getting visas for their representatives they were unable to send their best talent to Worlds 2021. Our last time seeing a VCS team in an international competition was the 2020 Mid-Season Invitational, this extra split is well deserved.

It’s finally time for the VCS to come back with a bang. It’ll be a delight seeing this region’s best go at it. But, one can’t help but wonder what some of their top talents would’ve been able to do on the Worlds stage.
