Worlds 2023 Swiss Round Three Preview

The competition is heating up at Worlds. We are heading into the third round of Swiss matches.

G2 and Gen.G are the first match at the top of the bracket for teams at 2-0. G2 is the lone team from the West with a 2-0 start to the worlds. Gen.G is the top seed from the LCK and the lone team from that region to go 2-0.  It’s a rematch from the worlds 2020 where G2 eliminated Gen.G in the quarterfinals. The winner of this match will clinch a spot in the knockout stage.

JD Gaming and LNG are the other pair of teams at 2-0. They will have a rematch of the 2023 LPL Summer playoffs, which were won by JD Gaming.  The winner gets a spot in the knockout rounds and will be the lone LPL team to go 3-0.

Bilibili drew Fnatic in their next match. This is a battle of 1-1 teams with Bilibili falling on day two and Fnatic winning on day two. Fnatic is looking to avoid falling to 0-2 against LPL teams at Worlds 2023 after a day-one loss to LNG. Billibilli is looking to rebound after yet another loss to JD Gaming. The loser of this match will be up for elimination.

Our next match will be Cloud9 vs T1.  This is a battle of second seeded teams from the LCS and LCK. It’s a rematch of the 2022 groups stage, where T1 took both games from Cloud9 on their way to winning the group. Cloud9 finished 1-5 and last in that same group. A win for Cloud9 would surpass their win total from last year. A loss puts them on the brink of a trip home.  A T1 loss would have them facing elimination earlier than expected.

KT Rolster drew Weibo Gaming in round three. This is a matchup of 1-1 teams. The loser faces elimination.

Mad Lions drew NRG for round thee. NRG is looking to hand Mad Lions their second loss in three worlds games, both to LCS teams. This would put Mad Lions up for elimination.  Mad Lions are to avoid that and put NRG the top seed from the LCS up for elimination instead.

Next to last is Dplus KIA and BDS.  This is an elimination game with the loser going home.  It will be a best of three series.  Can Dplus KIA and 2022 worlds quarterfinalist avoid an early exit against worlds newcomer BDS?

Our last match is Team Liquid vs GAM.  This is also an elimination best of three match. Team Liquid is looking to salvage a win against the only non-major region team remaining in the tournament. GAM is looking to send Team Liquid home in embarrassing fashion and avoid the expectation of them going winless this entire tournament.
