Three Reasons why Griffin won’t win worlds
1. The Group of Death
Griffin was placed in Group A for the Worlds group stage, which makes their road to a World Championship all the harder. This is because Group A has G2, the European top seed and tournament favorite. The group also features Cloud9, the LCS second seed and Worlds semi-finalists in 2018, as well as a play-in team Hong Kong Attitude of the LMS, another major region.
G2 is favored to win the group ahead of Griffin, and Hong Kong Attitude is presumed to be the fourth-place finisher due to them being a play-in team. It should come down to a battle for second place and the last spot in quarterfinals between Griffin and Cloud9.
Depending on how they play against Cloud9, Griffin may fail to get out of groups. It should be a good matchup between those two teams regardless because of how highly rated both teams are. Griffin is favored over Cloud9 due to having a higher rating. However, Cloud9 does have a tendency to make it out of hard groups, so Griffin could be the latest casualty if the trend continues.
2. SKT
Yes, Griffin does have a winning record against SKT in the regular season they went 3-1 against them during the 2019 regular season play. However, playoffs was a whole different story.
The fact that Griffin was swept 3-0 in Spring Split and then lost 3-1 in Summer Split to SKT has Griffin looking like an underdog against SKT. If you believe in the notion of an SKT buff, then Worlds SKT is looking like a double buff.
SKT seems to have Griffin’s number when the chips are down after those two playoff series and it should continue if they meet at Worlds. SKT has more World championships than Griffin has Worlds appearances and that should help give them a mental edge they can use over Griffin. I wouldn’t want to bet against the favorites in SKT in this had to head matchup.
3. Other top contenders
If SKT can’t finish off Griffin, there are plenty of other teams who can. Griffin should fear G2, but outside of their group Fnatic, RNG and even Team Liquid are battle-tested teams that have been to Worlds before and hold that advantage over Griffin. FunPlus Phoenix, another tournament favorite is on equal footing inexperience with Griffin as this is their first Worlds as well, but they defeated Griffin in their match at 2019 Rift Rivals.
Griffin isn’t going to be an easy out for any of these teams, but it’s hard to say that they are one of the S tier favorites like an SKT, or G2. So if Griffin is falling to anybody I think it’s going to be to a higher rated team.
Griffin is going to be an exciting team to watch at this year’s world championship. See if they can take home the title from the favorites.
The League of Legends World Championship resumed on Saturday, October 12 at 8:00 EST / 14:00 CEST.
