LCS Summer 2020: Week 7 Player Power Rankings
By Josh Tyler
Our LCS Summer 2020 Week 7 player power ranking ranks the supports and we hand out our weekly awards.
Support
1. Philippe “Vulcan” Laflamme (Cloud9) – 98.3
There may not be a more dominant player in any role in the LCS than Vulcan, which is surprising given how many fans and pundits consider CoreJJ to be a consensus MVP candidate after Week 7. We’ll talk about CoreJJ in a second, but let’s also consider what Vulcan has done.
Yes, in Week 7 he had a bit of a down week because of his 1/2/5 Lux game in the TL loss, but he went 1/3/19 on the weekend as a whole, which is quite amazing. Those 19 assists in two games are quite amazing and go to show how valuable Vulcan is as a support. On the year, his 9.6 assists per game dwarf all other supports (Ignar is the only other support with 9 or more assists per game, and Poome is the only one other one with 8 or more).
2. Tristan “Zeyzal” Stidam (Evil Geniuses) – 87.1
3. Jo “CoreJJ” Yong-in (Team Liquid) – 84.5
Many will cry heresy for not only not having CoreJJ the number one-ranked support in the LCS, but the audacity to have him third. And yes, I will acknowledge that CoreJJ has been a great player this split with a lot of stupendous plays. His league-leading 74.8% kill participation and 3.20 vision score per minute demonstrate that.
However, there are a few worrying statistics that make me question just how much we are deceived by our eyes. First, while everyone was left in awe by his 4/3/7 Blitzcrank game that helped topple Cloud9, it seems to have also vaporized the memory of his 0/3/2 game on Bard in the loss to FlyQuest. A 4/6/9 weekend (barely over a 2.00 KDA) isn’t exactly stellar, especially compared to Vulcan.
CoreJJ’s 2.55 adjusted KDA is actually third in the LCS (Vulcan leads with 5.30 and TSM’s newcomer Treatz has a 3.69 aKDA in a limited sampling of games). He’s also one of the least-gold efficient supports in the game, taking up 9.4% of his team’s gold (second-highest behind only Vulcan at 10%). Unlike Vulcan, however, who uses his gold to output the most damage of any support (203 DPM), CoreJJ’s 132 DPM is one of the worst in his role.
And before you say “yeah well look at the champions he’s playing” his two most-played champions are Bard and Blitzcrank. In the tier one of leagues (LCK, LEC, LPL), both those champions have higher average DPM than what CoreJJ is outputting. In fact, Bard (his most-played champion) has an average DPM of 173 in over 105 games worldwide. If CoreJJ is soaking this many resources on more high-damage supports, why is he doing so little damage?
4. Lee “Ignar” Dong-geun (FlyQuest) – 83.3
5. Erik “Treatz” Wessén (TSM) – 81.2
6. Choi “huhi” Jae-hyun (Golden Guardians) – 80.5
7. Nickolas “Hakuho” Surgent (Immortals) – 79.6
8. Philippe “Poome” Lavoie-Giguere (100 Thieves) – 78.4
9. Vincent “Biofrost” Wang (TSM) – 76.9
10. Zaqueri “Aphromoo” Black (Dignitas) – 76.2
11. Andy “Smoothie” Ta (CLG) – 75.5
12. William “Stunt” Chen (100 Thieves) – 75.2
13. Austin “Gate” Yu (Immortals) – 70.9
