On International Talk Like a Pirate Day, how can you be more of a buccaneer in League of Legends?

Ahoy! League of Legends has 145 champions to chose from, but only a few fit the theme of today, September 19th, which is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. So in the spirit of all things pirate why not discuss more how you can flay the colors as a Pirate while playing League today, or any day.

The obvious answer to how to be a pirate in League is to play one of the three champions that are already pirates. These being Miss Fortune, Pyke, and Gangplank.

Fend off scurvy with your oranges while parleying the powder kegs to attack the enemy as Gangplank. Then send in the cannon barrage to really finish off any strays.

Miss Fortune relays more on her pistol and rapid firepower to send her enemies to the deep. Pyke is all about getting the gold like any good pirate should be with his ultimate scoring gold for himself and his teammates. In addition, either Miss Fortune and Gangplank can also be upgraded to a captain if you don the right skin for either of them.

Speaking of skins, many champions have skins that turn them into swashbucklers.  Graves, Quinn, Aatrox, Diana, Fiddlesticks, Garen, Katrina, Rumble, Ryze, Swain, Twisted Fate, Vladimir, and Twitch all sport the look of pirates in some sort of skin line.  So no matter what lane your ship docks in you can be ready to engage the enemy.

The final way to hoist the colors on the rift would be to adopt a pirate team composition like they have in Teamfight Tactics.  With a Gangplank top lane, Graves jungle, Twisted Fate mid, a Miss Fortune ADC, and Pyke support you’ll have all the synergies and positions covered from units classes as pirates in TFT. Cloud 9 Academy tried this composition in a game so it might be professionally approved to try out.

If you don’t feel like playing Summoner’s Rift you can still celebrate pirates on TFT. As I mentioned above Pirates is one of the classes of units in TFT, including all the champions I mentioned above. In TFT getting three pirate units out gets you additional gold up to four after a combat round against another player.

Using Gunslingers synergizes well with Pirate units as does Blademasters. Yet with only five Pirate units it might not be good all alone like if you have six Nobles or Sorcerers.

The final way to play would have been great if they brought it back for today, but sadly they didn’t. ARAM did have a time when it had a Bilgewater-based field instead of Howling Abyss. There were even missions to go alongside the new playing field. It felt different at first but looked really cool to play on. Maybe we shall see its return at a later date.
