We continue to break down why each team can or cannot win the League of Legends World Championship, now moving on to GAM Esports.

Gam Esports will represent Vietnam at the League of Legends World Championship this year as one of two teams heading to Worlds. Let’s take a look at some reasons this team as a chance and some reasons they won’t be winning Vietnam’s first Worlds title.

Why GAM will win

1. They are champions

Winning a split is never easy, or a sure thing for any team, especially after a rough split during the spring. GAM went 6-8 with a 15-21 game record to finish fifth and miss playoffs during the VCS Spring Split in 2019.

Summer 2019 was a whole different story. They finished 11-3 (game record of 23-8) which was good enough to secure them first place. Then during the playoffs, they won 3-1 over Lowkey, another Worlds team in the semifinals. In the finals, they beat Team Flash 3-1 to gain this spot at worlds.

While the start from spring may not indicate that GAM is a consistent team, they did have a great split in summer. If they are playing their best League of Legends, which it seems they are right now, you can’t really deny them their spot at worlds. They took on all comers and ended with the VCS win as the first seed is the favorite to do. Props to them for being the best in a region even if its a smaller one.

2. No play-ins

The good news for GAM is their odds are already improved due to the fact that they’ve qualified for the group stage.  This also means that we will get to see how GAM fairs against some of the major region teams.

Not only did Gam avoid play-ins they got a pretty easy draw, matching up with J Team and FunPlus Phoenix in Group B. Splyce, Clutch, and Damwon would be the three hardest teams that could join their group after play-ins. If its a squad other than Damwon expect GAM to battle their way out of this group, into quarterfinals and maybe even further.

3. Upset Candidates.

Vietnam is a sneaky region, that has proven they can beat the teams from bigger region, and GAM is no exception. They took TSM to five games at 2017 MSI, even though they lost it via reverse sweep. Later that year, at 2017 Worlds, GAM tied with Immortals and Fnatic at 2-4 in groups, ultimately falling to Fnatic and exiting the tournament.

With an easier draw, why couldn’t they have a shot to score some upsets?

FunPlus Phoenix is a first-time team to Worlds, as is Griffin, so GAM has an experience edge. Splyce and Clutch would be decent challenges, but not impossible to defeat. G2 pretty much has nightmares if you mention some form of Dashing Buffalo, so why can’t a team better than them like GAM defeat G2? I just feel like this team can and will surprise a lot of teams at worlds.
