Who is the best top laner playing in the 2019 League of Legends World Championship?

With the World Championship starting in just over a week, which teams have the strongest players coming out of the top lane? Today we will rank every single top laner at the 2019 World Championship based on their statistical performance during their domestic 2019 Summer Split regular-season performance.

While comparing statistics can be a bit tricky, especially not knowing which statistics are most important, we also have to account for disparities in the quality of competition for each player domestically. Therefore, these rankings will be driven by normalized averages of five key analytics that we developed for Blog of Legends:

  • Kill efficiency, measured by adjusted KDA multiplied by adjusted kill participation
    • Adjusted KDA is calculated the same as KDA, but weighing solo kills to be twice as much as a kill and only counting an assist to be worth half a kill (aKDA = (kills + solo kills + (assists/2))/deaths)
    • Adjusted KP is calculated by taking the difference between a player’s kill participation, kill share, and death share and the average for his position added to 100% (aKP = 100% + (KP-avgKP) + (KS-avgKS) – (DS-avgDS))
  • Adjusted gold per minute, which is a player’s raw gold per minute multiplied by the difference in his gold share and the average gold share for his position
  • Adjusted damage per minute, which is a player’s raw damage per minute multiplied by the difference in his damage share and the damage share for his position
  • Vision score per minute
  • Laning score (an average of the player’s gold, XP, and CS differentials at 15 minutes, along with his solo kills all normalized relative to his position)

Here are the average statistics among the 24 top laners at the World Championship:

  • Average Kill Efficiency = 2.76
  • Average aGPM = 402.1
  • Average aDPM = 442
  • Average VSPM = 1.02
  • Average laning score = 0.03

Based on these stats, we have given each player an overall rating (similar to a player’s rating in Madden or FIFA) with 75 OVR being an average player and 99 OVR being the best in the world. These ratings are adjusted based on the quality of competition (players in the LCK, LPL, and LEC will have their overall scores adjusted upward, players in the LST, CBLoL, LCL, LJL, LLA, OPL, and TCL will be adjusted downward). So, how do each of the 24 Worlds teams’ top laners stack up?
