League of Legends Worlds: Top 5 quarterfinals story lines
By s. samek
The League of Legends World Championship has completed two intense rounds of gameplay. We discuss five storylines to watch for during the knockout stage of Worlds.
The League of Legends World Championship is heading into the knockout round. Each of the eight surviving teams have a lot to play for as they all try to reach the grand finals. Many of these teams have a storyline connected to their run in the quarterfinals, in this piece we will discuss five storylines to watch for during the Worlds knockout stage.
1. Home Sweet Home
Home region advantage does seem to be alive at the League of Legends World Championships, as Europe has seen all three of their teams advance to the bracket stage. G2, Fnatic, and Splyce each received the second seed in their respective groups to advance to the next stage of Worlds.
They represent just under half the field of eight and a share with Korea as the region that sent the most representatives to the bracket stage. This gives them pretty good odds to try to become the second region, but first since 2014’s Samsung White to win a title while their home region hosted Worlds.
A set of one seeds from groups awaits them, but with G2 and Fnatic still being top-rated teams that survived some tough challenges in groups I wouldn’t doubt them to make strong runs in the bracket. Splyce is probably the weakest team still left but could pull off an upset and send this tournament into chaos if they can take care of SKT. Should Splyce pull off this upset and G2 win over Damwon in quarterfinals it would guarantee a home team in the grand finals. This might be a long shot, but it’s worth mentioning.

Fnatic has the tough task of beating the LPL’s FunPlus Phoenix, with Invictus and Griffin awaiting the winner of that series. However, with one championship under their belt and plenty of experience in group stage matches, I don’t think the 2018 Worlds runner-ups are going down without a fight. I think Fnatic is more than capable of winning their side of the bracket and getting another shot at a title.
Either way, if you’re an LEC fan you have a lot to root for during quarterfinals as your region performed as one of the best overall at 2019 Worlds with the potential to do a lot more.
