Riot announced some big changes to the TFT pass system for Set 3, as well as ranked rewards for Set 2!

Teamfight Tactics Set 3 is right around the corner, and everyone is excited to see what might be coming as far as the new Galaxies rule-changing system and the continued, teased release of TFT mobile. Today, Riot dropped a major bomb in terms of the cosmetics in Set 3, the ranked rewards for Set 2, and a new type of cosmetics that will be coming! Here’s everything that got announced and how hyped we should be for the new changes!

A New Paid Season Pass

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first, or at least the news that will be most un-palatable to most TFT players. Riot announced that, going forward, there will be a paid season pass starting with Set 3’s Galaxies, called Galaxies Pass+. This will work very similar to the season pass formulas of Fortnite or Call of Duty, where there are rewards you can earn for free by progressing through the pass as well as other rewards you can earn if you buy the paid system.

However, the new paid pass is better than those from most other games in a few ways.

First, the paid pass will not offer anything in the way of power or game advantages, such as when Call of Duty’s pass would unlock new weapons or equipment. Second, the paid pass unlocks any premium rewards you already earned and you are able to purchase the pass up until the last day you can unlock XP. This means that you could, theoretically, wait until the end of the Set to see which premium rewards you would get before deciding if it is worth your while to drop 1350 RP.

In addition, the arenas you will be getting in the free pass will be seriously upgraded. The Galaxies Pass will have space-themed emotes and two new Little Legends. However, the Galaxies Pass+ will unlock 20 levels of rewards and a new UFO Sprite, so you can unlock even more cool stuff if you want to drop the coin.

A Change to the XP Grind

Riot also announced that they will be getting rid of the Orb of Enlightenment and instead of switching to a system where you will get a little bit of experience for each game of TFT you play. This means that the missions will really be your only way to get big chunks of XP, but you will see constant progress on your journey through the Galaxies Pass.

Speaking of missions, Riot will now grant only three missions per week (there used to be six) but they will be a bit more challenging and unique. This means that we should be getting more experience gains from the missions but we’ll need to make a conscious effort to complete them.

A Better Little Legends Experience

Riot acknowledged that the current egg model for getting specific Little Legends you want can cause frustration, so they’re changing that for the Galaxies Pass. Riot will be introducing new Little Legends variants that will be available to directly purchase from the shop.

However, you will only be able to buy the specific Little Legend one time (it will upgrade to the next star level if you already own that Little Legend). In addition, only a select few Little Legends will be available at the start, but Riot does appear to be willing to add more down the line. They also teased a new system to upgrade your favorite Little Legends.

New Cosmetics

While Riot already promised us upgraded Arenas in the next set (the teased ones look Dark Star and Odyssey-themed) and better Little Legend progression, they’ve also announced a new type of cosmetic in TFT. Booms! are the newest type of cosmetic, which modifies the particle damage of your Little Legend and units. These will have their own tiers as well, meaning you could watch your little Silverwing get blasted by a heavy artillery fire from a 3-star Boom!

TFT Mobile

While Riot still hasn’t yet given us info about when TFT mobile will officially be out, they did confirm today that the Galaxies Pass will work on TFT mobile at launch. This means that you will be able to earn XP and rewards on your mobile device as you play, however, the store to purchase the Galaxies Pass+ will not be available at launch. You will also have access to any Little Legends and Arenas you have access to on your PC account.

Ranked Rewards

Finally, Riot also gave us a look at the ranked reward for Set 2 and beyond. Set 1 players will remember that players who reached Gold elo were rewarded with a special emote. But Riot appears ready to out-do themselves for Set 2.

All players who reach Gold in Set 2 will get a special variant of a Little Legend, similar to the Victorious skins in League of Legends. In addition, players who got to Gold in Set 1 will also get a special variant/Victorious Little Legend, so there will be two possible new rewards for players at the top of the TFT ladder!
