A look at the possible future rework of Ryze
It looks like Ryze, the Rune Mage, is getting a future rework at some point.
Ah yes, we all love Ryze, the Rune Mage, in League of Legends. Primarily a mid-lane champion, Ryze isn’t the META he used to be. Mainly due to an ultimate that is mainly a utility late in matches, Ryze would benefit from another rework in the grand scheme of things.
In an article written by James “Obscurica” Chen of PvPLive.net, here’s what a developer of League of Legends said in response to a player asking what their honest thoughts on Ryze are:
"Not sure on Ryze direction frankly, need to put some extended thought into that when time permits. Agree he’s certainly a Shen/Azir style of problem. I think there’s a lot more to it than just the ult though (highly reliable and responsive hard CC, significantly better improved performance at low latency than most champs, lack of ult CD dependence for optimal damage pattern etc)."

Needless to say, Ryze just isn’t as a refined a champion as others are. His ultimate works great late in matches but building up to it, his kit is mostly to annoy, harass, and poke the opposition. When a team needs to teleport quickly to push a lane, his “Realm Warp” ability works well but again, it’s a situational ability.
While Ryze’s ultimate can be a game-changer if everyone is on the same page, his overall kit could use a rework to make him more viable in mid-lane. Considering that his ultimate does no damage, again, it would make sense to give him a totally new kit with an ultimate that packs some punch.
While there is no estimated time for when such a rework could happen, it looks like it’s on the horizon. Since Ryze is a mage, it’s imperative that developers give him abilities to go well with his lore. He should be able to teleport but also perhaps have some fire, ice, or even arcane abilities to be more of a ranged damage dealing champion. One that can hold his own or at the very least, have an ultimate that compliments his team better instead of just being a teleportation.
