Maokai, the Twisted Treant, got an awesome rework and is already a hit as a top laner in League of Legends.

In the recent 7.8 Patch Update, League of Legends dropped many new changes to the game. Besides making ARAM even faster and a plethora of updates, they gave Maokai, the Twisted Treant, a nice rework.

Mostly as a viable top lane option, Maokai’s previous kit left much to the imagination. He was good but with this new rework, can now be even more exciting to play as. Besides his passive ability “Sap Magic” still healing him which is great when working through minions, his “Sapling Toss” and new Ultimate “Nature’s Grasp” now pack some serious punch.

Sapling Toss is now much more strategic since placing a sapling in a bush makes it last longer and also deal more damage when coming in contact with enemy champions. This is a great ability that can be a difference maker late in matches.

Nature’s Grasp has been completely redone with a new animation and everything. It now summons a huge wall of brambles and thorns that can push top lane forward while rooting enemy champions. This is perfect for setting up quality ganks that result in kills with your jungler.

As per Champion.gg, Maokai has won about 46.03 percent of his matches so far. If he’s your main or you plan to use him in the future, make sure to stack up on attack speed and armor when it comes to runes and items. Start out by building your “Spirit Visage” all the way to “Randuin’s Omen” for maximum effectiveness.

If you want to avoid some headaches in the Summoner’s Rift, make sure to ban Wukong, the Monkey King, as he counters Maokai very well. You’ll be in for a long match if Wukong is your enemy in the top lane but on the flipside, Maokai does very well against Poppy, Jarvan IV, and Gnar.

Overall, this newly reworked Maokai is a hit to play as that can set up some nice plays in the top lane. Make no mistake about it, League of Legends made a great decision with his reworked kit as his ultimate is not only a game-changer but looks pretty cool once he pops it.
