G2 Esports: The Dark Lords of Europe Strike Back!
By Michael Salt
After a fall from grace and an interruption to their 4 consecutive EU LCS titles, will 2019 be the year that the former kings of Europe – G2 Esports – will rise from the ashes and snatch back their crown?
We cast our eyes back to a time of dominance; EU LCS Summer Split 2017. G2 was at the top of their game, AD Carry Jesper “Zven” Svenningsen and support Alfonso “Mithy” Aguirre Rodriguez was the eponymous “Best in the West” bottom lane pairing and Luka “Perkz” Perković was consistently dominant in the middle of the map, captaining his team to victory. Their 4th consecutive split win and the EU LCS was firmly in their grasp. Going into 2018 everything looked beautiful and G2 were well on their way to split number 5. Or so they thought.
Zven and Mithy made their way to much greener pastures when offered more green by TSM owner Andy “Reginald” Dihn also leading the way to top laner Expect and jungler Trick’s departures.
G2 was a shell of its former self and the only remaining piece was, Perkz, the bad boy of Europe. With Perkz as the centerpiece of the squad, they rebuilt bringing in ROCCAT’s bottom lane Petter “Hjarnan” Freyschuss & Kim “Wadid” Bae-in wholesale, along with Splyce’s top laner Martin “Wunder” Hansen and H2K’s infamous jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski.

With these changes, G2’s identity as a late-game team fighting powerhouse contorted into the current mid-game centric split-push map domination team. By all accounts, G2 should easily have been able to smash their way through the competition and snatch their 5th split from the hands of all their competitors.
