Just like every other reveal for the newly franchised LEC; the announcement for the LEC playoff format is certainly something to get ridiculously hyped about!

Just like champion reworks, you can’t completely overhaul something and expect people to still recognise it. And in keeping with that philosophy Riot is keeping the regular season Best-of-1 round robin format, making sure the spring and summer splits are still familiar to both viewers and players alike.

But the playoffs is where things get significantly more interesting. In what I would call a stroke of genius, they’ve decided to dial up the drama and made the playoff bye much more potent in securing an advantage.

The Breakdown

“So, how exactly does this new playoff format work?” I hear you ask. Here goes…

Just like all previous seasons, the playoffs will include the top 6 teams of the inaugural LEC season, and they’ll battle it out in a seeded tournament.

The first round finds the 3rd seed choosing between the 5th & 6th seeds in Match 1, with the 4th seed getting pitted against the team not selected in Match 2.

The winning teams of those matches advance to the second round with the losers being eliminated.

Match 3 finds the winners of Match 1&2 facing each other and the winner advances with (yes, you guessed it folks) the loser being eliminated.

In Match 4, we find the 1st and 2nd seeds face one another for a place in the final, and the tensions really ramp up for Match 5 where the winner of Match 3 and loser of Match 4 fight for a place in the Grand Final.
