LEC 2019: Day 1 Predictions – Dynasties Collide
By Michael Salt
Today is the day! The LEC begins and in just a few minutes, we’ll be seeing the culmination of all the hype that Riot has been building for the newly franchised European league. In this brief rundown, dynasties collide and new blood fight for their place in the LEC!
Game 1 – SK Gaming vs Fnatic
How else do you start the inaugural week of the LEC? By pitting two of the oldest European dynasties against each other in our very own El Clásico.
SK’s roster is mainly made up of the bones of the MAD Lions who destroyed their competition in the EU Masters tournament last year, add in former SKT T1 Midlaner Choi “Pirean” Jun-sik and Korean-solo queue god Han “Dreams” Min-kook.
And on the other side of the map, we find Fnatic’s uber-successful 2018 roster sans the immovable rock Paul “sOAZ” Boyer and superstar mid-laner Rasmus “Caps” Winther.
Despite Tim “Nemesis” Lipovšek being a significant downgrade I call this one an easy #FNCWin.
Game 2 – Excel Esports vs Splyce
In game 2 we’re going to see a bitter rivalry form. Kobbe and KaSing once formed the backbone of Splyce but now they find themselves on opposite sides. Once looking out for each other’s backs, now looking to put a target on the other.
This is a close one honestly, I don’t have massively high expectations for this Excel roster but I am in fact a Brit so I’ve got no choice but to scream #ItsComingHome from the rooftops.
So that’s going to be a big #XLWin from me.

Game 3 – FC Schalke 04 vs Team Vitality
This game will simply put… be a battle of the bot-lanes. Upset & IgNar vs Attila and Jactroll, ridiculously potent playmaking supports paired up with mechanically sound AD Carries. The bottom lane will be fairly evenly matched, along with Cabochard taking on Vizicsacsi in the top lane.
Plainly put, the mid/jungle duos will decide this match. TCL import Abbedagge will be kept on his toes by Vitality’s Italian Stallion Jiizuké and despite Memento’s best efforts I don’t see him holding a candle to Mowgli (formerly of the Afreeca Freecs.)
This one is fairly one-sided for me. #VITWin
Game 4 – Rogue vs Misfits Gaming
What do you get if you remove the weakest part of Misfit’s 2018 roster and dump him in the middle of the weakest parts of ROCCAT’s 2018 roster? You get Kikis and Wadid 2v8. There’s a reason why I put Rogue in 8th place for my preseason tier list.
Misfits took what was already a playoff-ready roster and upgraded every aspect of it, the only possible weakness in Misfits’ armour is focusing Febiven and causing the same kind of mental boom that he suffered in 2018’s NA LCS Summer.
Rogue could prove me wrong, and I welcome them to but this is a #MSFWin.
Game 5 – Origen vs G2 Esports
With Mithy returning from NA with everything to prove, we have a battle for the Iberian Peninsula.
2 European dynasties opened today’s matches and 2 European dynasties will close today’s matches.
While on paper G2 are the strongest of the 2 teams, you’ll be seeing both sides giving each other everything that they’ve got. This is really a case of brains vs brawn, will Wunder be able to brute-force 1v1s against Alphari? Will Mikyx and Perkz be able to out-rotate and run circles around Patrik and Mithy? Will this year truly be the year of the duck? I say yes.
Controversial but I call this an #OGWin.
Today’s games are going to be so exciting. Day 1 is the day of dynasties. Lets see if I was right tomorrow. Let us know in the comments if your predictions were right!!!
