LCK week one – day one

SKT VS. JAG

  • Winner: SKT T1

As fitting for the first match of the LCK in 2019, SKT typical of the Korean playstyle, played a slow and calculating first match against Jin Air. Starting off with their Urgot and Viktor flex in the draft phase (mid and top respectively), SKT drafted champions for a safe laning phase and adopted a play-through-all-lanes strategy in the mid-game. While Jin Air had mad team fight combos with Xin Zhao and Galio, their lack of communication and questionable engages allowed SKT to punish them heavily, and eventually take Game 1, with SKT’s Kim “Clid” Tae-min earning the MVP title of the match.

Game 2 was a much closer match, at least during the early laning phase. Jin Air was able to secure first blood in the top lane, off of Kim “Khan” Dong-ha, and while attempting to grow their lead, Kim “Malrang” Geun-seong continued to bully SKT’s top laner for the rest of the laning phase.

More from League of Legends

However, things on the other side of the map were going in SKT’s favor, as  Park “Teddy” Jin-seong on Varus continued to win trades against his opponents while Cho “Mata” Se-Hyeong on Tahm Kench negated any of his missteps. Things in the mid-game went well for Jin Air, having secured both first turret on the top side and the Rift Herald.

However, SKT’s vision game and smart rotations allowed them to sneak the baron despite and swing the game back into their favor. With a failed engage on Rakan from Jin Air’s side and a fully stacked Blade of the Ruined King Varus, Jin Air was quickly defeated during the baron push from SKT.

DWG VS. GEN

  • Winner: Damwon Gaming

Despite a bit of a rocky start from the Damwon Gaming squad in the early stages of Game 1 – giving away first blood and first turret – their team’s multidimensional team fighting and Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu’s slippery but damage-filled play as Kha’zix was able to secure them a fast win against Gen.G. Canyon was able to play as aggressive as he pleased, with a Galio and Gangplank ultimate always backing him up. A 5v5 team fight win in the favor of Damwon eventually secured them the baron and their first win of the split.

Game 2 between Damwon Gaming and Gen.G looked a lot closer despite Damwon’s top Vladimir pick proving to be a huge threat by the end of the game. The early game was pretty even, and Damwon even grew overconfident in their plays, with midgame looking a little shaky. However, with a smashing team fight win and Gen.G’s lack of burst damage to deal with the Vladimir, veteran team Gen.G lost another game to the rising Damwon team.
