League of Legends Patch 9.6 tier list: support edition
By Josh Tyler
Rounding up our League of Legends tier list for Patch 9.6, we look at which supports you should be maining if you want that sweet elo.
Support was probably the least-affected position by Patch 9.6, and as a result, our tier list is fairly stagnant. Still, we check in with our support friends to let them know which support in League of Legends they should be playing and which they should be avoiding.
Tier list
S tier: Thresh, Morgana, Nami, Soraka
A tier: Sona, Janna, Zilean, Blitzcrank, Zyra, Pyke, Fiddlesticks, Bard, Lux, Lulu
B tier: Taric, Vel’Koz, Leona, Brand, Galio, Alistar, Xerath, Nautilus
C tier: Rakan, Neeko, Karma, Braum, Tahm Kench
D tier: Viegar, Gragas, Shen
Rising champions
Galio (C tier to B tier)
Galio didn’t get much love in the last patch, but he rose up our tier list a bit. In fact, a few sites even have the Colossus rated as A tier pick. I wouldn’t prioritize him, but he’s certainly a decent option if you want a heavy engage support.

Xerath (C tier to B tier)
Xerath has always been an interesting champion when it comes to the support role. Some tier lists consider him to be an extremely strong “off-meta” pick (A tier) while others consider him to be in the wrong role here (C tier). However you slice it, if you can play Xerath he’s a decent pick in the support role.
Alistar (C tier to B tier)
Last patch Alistar was ranked either very highly or poorly in other sites’ tier lists. Now, he’s rated much more consistently, but not as a priority pick. He’s very solidly agreed to be a decent, meta but not strong, pick as a support.
Falling champions
Braum (B tier to C tier)
Last patch, most sites considered Braum to be around average. Now, more and more are considering the Heart of the Freljord to be a below-average choice. Only two sites have him rated even as B tier right now.
Leona (A tier to B tier)
Tank supports are struggling in Patch 9.6, in fact, tanks are generally struggling. Leona is no exception, as she fell from a strong pick to a weak one in this latest tier list. Perhaps with some rune or item changes, she and the other tank supports will become more viable choices in soloQ.
Vel’Koz (A tier to B tier)
Vel’Koz has long been considered one of the strongest mage supports, but now he has fallen to the B tier. I don’t think this will remain the case for long, as many of the sites still consider him to be a strong pick, but it seems the meta is shifting to favor enchanter supports more and more.
Buffed champions
Nautilus
Naut got a lot of buffs to his passive and shield, which should have made him rise in priority among tank supports. But, as mentioned above, these tank supports are just struggling too badly. Unfortunately, this leaves the Titan of the Depths in the same slot of this tier list as he was in the last: a below-average pick.
