By Josh Tyler
Riot announced a new champion progression system for League of Legends but what is it?
Rejoice, all you Mastery 5 spammers, there is soon going to be another way to show that you’re the best Yasuo one-trick in Silver II. Today, Riot previewed a new champion progression system coming to League of Legends soon called Eternals.

What is “Eternals” you’re asking? Well, according to the /dev post, the system is designed to be another way for players to showcase their individual accomplishments on champions. When the system goes live, you’ll be able to track your personal bests and milestones on champions (like hitting 1,000 kills on Draven or healing 1 trillion damage on Soraka) and show off to your allies and friends!
You’ll get shout-outs in game for your best performances or when you hit certain milestones, as well as some cool in-game swag to show off for yourself. These achievements will also be available to see on the player card during loading screen (according to a
). In addition, you’ll be able to upgrade the mastery emote for any champion you have reached five milestones on that Eternal set.
A nice little bit of extra flair added to your mastery emote to show how many games you’ve put into your one-trick. Once you pass the five milestones, though, you’ll get to start tracking your champion milestones and achievements as they happen!
"When we decided to add progression to Eternals, we wanted players to have moments where they felt especially awesome with rewards that felt unique. One of the ideas we were inspired by came from the fitness world: Personal Bests. We loved the idea of Eternals being a way for you to capture an awesome game on your main, and let you show it off to everyone in the moment. We didn’t want everyone to hit their Personal Best in their first or second game, though, so we made it a reward that’s revealed after rekindling an Eternal. Rekindling is when you hit the 5th milestone on one Eternal, and it has a ramping progression that takes roughly the same amount of time as it does to get Mastery 5 on a champion. Once you’ve rekindled your Eternal and unlocked your Personal Best, the time between milestones flattens out so that you can see your achievements more frequently!"
Basically, if you play enough games on a champion you’ll “unlock” your Eternal so you’ll track the progression on that champion more closely. You’ll get those in-game shoutouts and notifications more frequently, according to Riot. Basically, it’s another system on top of the current mastery system, but a bit more drilled down for each specific champion.
In addition, according to another Rioter, the system won’t just track stats but will “track successful execution of champions’ core patterns (i.e. doing their combos correctly, etc.)” and provide more in-depth analysis. This will because each champion will have multiple levels of Eternals (two common, one unique) to track these different kinds of stats.
It is important to note, however, that these Eternals will cost RP to start using. From the /dev post, it also looks like there will be a limited number of Eternals at launch (unsure if this means not all champions will get one or if future sets will unlock unique milestones). In either case, purchasing one Eternals set seems to apply to more than just one champion.
For instance, the Warden set has champions like Nunu and Sejuani with milestones based on crowd control, while the Tricker set has champions like Teemo and Shaco that seems focused around invisibility. It’s unclear just what each set you buy will get you, but in any case, this seems like a fun new system for any one-tricks looking to show their proficiency.
Will you be getting into the Eternals once they come to League of Legends? Let us know in the comments!
