What Teamfight Tactics are coming when League of Legends Patch 9.18 drops tomorrow?

Another League of Legends patch drops tomorrow, but it promises to bring with it some massive changes. Patch 9.18 will introduce not only a new cast of Little Legends (from the Star Guardian universe no less) but also Neeko in a unique way. But beyond all that, what does Patch 9.18 have in store for Teamfight Tactics players?

Mystery Box System

More from League of Legends

"We’ve changed how items are distributed in PVE rounds. The goal is to keep a variety of experiences across many games, but also to make the game more fair over the course of a single game. Common boxes contain: gold, champions, or Neeko’s Help Uncommon Boxes contain item components, gold, champions, or Neeko’s Help Rare boxes contain: Spatulas, full items, gold, champions, or Neeko’s Help Every player gets approximately the same number of boxes across a single game. Every player gets approximately the same number of item components across a single game. Neeko’s Help Place on a champion to create a 1-star copy of that champion and add it to your bench. Doing so consumes Neeko’s Help."

So, thankfully, Riot listened to me and reduced the randomness of item drops in games of Teamfight Tactics. What is most interesting, though, is that you now get equivalent numbers of boxes and item components in a game. This will mean that players should be able to get a good number of items, but not necessarily of the same strength.

Adding a rarity system for the box drops is going to feel really good or really bad, depending on how early you can get Rare boxes (or how late you can get Common boxes). It’s also interesting that boxes can now contain champions as well, to increase the odds that players can get champions they want. As for Neeko’s Help, we discussed that in our article on the new items (which don’t seem to have made their way into the Teamfight Tactics patch yet), so I won’t dwell on it here, but I think it’s a solid change to allow players more utility to acquire champions they want to level up.
