Former League of Legends pro player Scarra recently put out an in-depth guide for Teamfight Tactics. What are the key lessons to learn?

Ever since leaving League of Legends content, former pro player William “scarra” Li, has been one of the best sources of educational Teamfight Tactics content. His guides have been immensely helpful in shaping new players’ understanding of this new game mode.

A few days ago, Scarra outdid himself, releasing an in-depth round-by-round guide (linked below). This video contains a ton of great tips and strategies you should be incorporating into Teamfight Tactics, but at almost 12 minutes it can be quite hard to refer to it during your next TFT ranked game. Therefore, I’ve decided to condense this video into this quick summation of his tips so you can quickly refer to the principals (at their most basic level) that Scarra is espousing. Obviously, I would still recommend you watch the whole video so you have a clear understanding of all these tips.

Stage 1

  • Every round in this stage is PvE (against minions). Positioning is pretty meaningless, you just want to make sure you have the max amount of units on the board.
  • After the first round, you want to put your original starting unit (the 2g unit you got from the Carousel) on the bench, replacing them with two units you buy from the shop. Buy pairs or triples if they’re available, otherwise, save the excess gold for later rounds.
  • If you have a strong 2g unit from the Carousel, keep it through Stage 1 even if you’re not finding a pair, otherwise, sell it.
  • Generally speaking, you’re just trying to get pairs and triples in Stage 1 while seeing what items you can get. Don’t re-roll at all, buy 2g units if they’re strong even if they don’t give you a pair.

Stage 2

Don’t worry about synergies! Just focus on putting the most power onto the board (either through 2-star units or strong 2 or 3g units) as you can. While you should certainly take synergies if you can, they’re not as valuable as a 2-star unit.

You should only level in this stage if you’re looking to push a winning streak (to snowball your advantage and get more econ). This becomes even more advisable when you’re getting a lot of good 2g units (so you can hit the higher level earlier and have better chances to get them to 2-stars).

If you start losing early, you need to focus on saving your income, riding the losing streak, and sacrificing some early life until you can make a big move (spending a lot in the mid game) slingshot yourself back up.

  • ONLY BUY 3g UNITS IF YOU ARE GOING TO PUT THEM ON THE BOARD! It’s very unlikely that you can get them to 2-stars very quickly. If you want to put them in because they’re a strong unit at 1-star, you have good items for, you will be trying to build your comp around later in the game, or they help your synergy that’s fine, but you should never have a 3g unit on your bench at this point.
    • One caveat I’ll make: if you somehow manage to get a pair of 3g units, it might be worth it to keep them on the bench together. Just don’t waste the gold and bench slots hoping you can hit an upgrade unless the pair came really easy to you.
  • In the Krug round, position all your units on the right side so all your units will focus on the solo Krug and you’ll avoid dying. See Scarra’s video for other nuances involving Assassins.
