We’ll definitely be circling October 15 on our calendars to get a sneak peek at what big changes are coming to League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics in Season 10. I also wonder what special guests might be joining the October 15 live stream?
Of course, the biggest piece of news that everyone will be talking about is Riot’s announcement regarding their player base. The last time that Riot publicly confirmed their peak active player count was in a 2017 statement in Forbes, where they said they had over 100 million active monthly players.
Now, obviously, this does not give us an apples-to-apples comparison since Riot is talking about peak concurrent players and not just daily players overall, let alone monthly players. However, we do have numbers on peak concurrent player numbers from 2014, also in Forbes. At that time, Riot boasted a peak concurrent player base of 7.5 million every day, so the game has definitely grown.
Some cynics may argue that half a million peak concurrent user growth in five years isn’t that impressive, but for a game that has a player base the size of League of Legends, that’s nothing to sniff at. In any case, the fact that League has 8 million players playing the game daily is incredibly impressive. Especially since “League of Legends killer” Fortnite hit its all-time concurrent player peak at 10.7 million, the fact that League hits just two million shy of that concurrent player count daily is quite impressive.
League has a bigger player base than the top ten games on Steam combined (weird flex, but okay), which includes DOTA 2, Rocket League, and CS:GO, meaning it seems poised to stick around for a long time. I guess that’s another hit to the argument that League of Legends is a dying game.
