Why Royal Youth will win Worlds
1. Turkish Champions
Royal Youth had a big improvement in the Summer Split of the TCL after a semifinal loss in the Spring Split. They finished the summer 16-2 in first place. After sweeping Aurora they fought Supermassive to a five-game series winning 3-2 to call themselves TCL champions.
They pretty much are the best team in Turkey. The placed ahead of Supermassive, who has worlds experience from last year. They finished ahead of 1907 Fenerbahce, the region’s 2019 MSI representative. If you want t to be the best beat the best and Royal Youth did that in Turkey. Now they have to do it at Worlds.
2. Solid roster
This roster stacked up very well in Turkey’s Summer Split, with four of five players earning all-pro first team for Summer Split of the TCL. Can “Closer” Çelik was named MVP of summer, thanks to a 6.1 KDA and 71.2 kill participation rate. Closer was rated number 16 on our Worlds jungler tier list but is still a player to watch and a player that may be a bit underrated.
3. Unknown
This is Royal Youth’s first time at worlds, adding them to the pool of teams most of the favorites for the tournament don’t have experience playing. Being unknown could help Royal Youth surprise teams with tactics and picks to mess with top teams and steal wins. Plus with Turkey being one of the better minor regions it’s not entirely out of the question for this team to get some upset wins, where those inexperienced teams from weaker smaller regions won’t.
Why Royal Youth Won’t win worlds
1. Low Ranking
Royal Youth came in 23rd of 24 on our Worlds ranking, making them one of the weakest teams in the tournament by rankings. They have a lot of ground to make up if they want to compete for the title against higher-rated teams.
2. A tough draw
The play-in group draw didn’t help the odds of a lengthy Royal Youth run, as they drew Damwon Gaming and Flamingo. Damwon is the highest-rated team in the play-ins, while Flamingo is strong and consistent from Brazil.
Flamingo should give Royal Youth all they can handle and I would call the match between the two one to watch. Luckily if they can finish second they avoid Damwon in knockouts, but lots of other group number one seeds like Splyce and Clutch could be ready to send them home. In all likelihood, Royal Youth will struggle just to make it to the main event of Worlds, let along win it all.
3. Minor Region
Although they are considered a decently strong region, Turkey is still considered a minor region. Turkey is also a region that also hasn’t done too well at Worlds.
1907 Fenerbache did make it to the main event in 2017 but went 0-6 in groups. In 2018 Supermassive looked pretty good in play-in groups going 3-1 but then lost to G-Rex in knockouts. So with no team from the TCL doing much at Worlds, I can’t imagine Royal Youth will be any different.
