We continue to break down why each of the team can, or cannot win the League of Legends Worlds 2019 Championship, now moving on to Damwon Gaming.

Damwon Gaming will represent Korea as their third seed at the League of Legends Worlds 2019 Championship. While they are relegated to play-ins this is a team to watch throughout the tournament. Let’s discuss three reasons why Damwon could, or couldn’t win it all.

Three Reasons why Damwon will win worlds

#1 Top Lane

Top Lane has Damwons’ biggest name. Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon is who I’m talking about.  Nuguri made the list for top laners as the top-rated player at the Worlds tournament. He does more damage than any top laner and makes more gold per minute than any of them too. He also rated at a 94 on that list which is high and 10 more points higher than the second-ranked top laner. He also made the list of players to watch in the play-in stage as well. Either way, you should watch Top lane be the main lane to carry Damwon to a title thanks to the big advantage they have there.

#2 Good Team from a major region

Damwon has had some pretty good results in a tough region, especially, for just getting promoted to the LCK during 2019 Spring Promotion. During the Spring Split they finished fifth but improved on that by finishing fourth in the playoffs, after beating Sandbox and losing to Kingzone Dragonx.

Then in the Summer Split, they improved even more. They went 13-5, 28-16  during the Summer Split and in second place, yet tied with Griffin for the best match record. However, they fell to SKT 3-0 in the semi-finals to end the split in third place.

That gave them the top seed for the regional qualifiers, which they used to full effect. They defeated Kingzone Dragonx 3-2 to earn a spot at Worlds.

Damwon is a constant playing and improving team. They show they can hang out with some of the other big-name teams in their region and I think that ability will transfer over to being able to play other big-name teams well in this tournament.

#3 Highly rated

Damwon scored well in our Worlds ranking list. The team came in ninth in the rankings. Which for a play-in team was the highest ranking.

Ninth place is pretty strong also for a team that has never been to Worlds before. This high-ranking further emphasizes they are a good team that can challenge for a world championship.

Three reasons why Damwon won’t win Worlds

#1 SKT

SKT will be the bane of many teams at this year’s Worlds and I think that includes Damwon. During the season the head to head series went 1-1 and 2-0 in favor of Damwon. However, SKT swept Damwon in the playoffs in their most recent meeting.  I feel like if these two teams meet again in the bracket stage SKT will beat them. They just have more experience playing the bigger games at Worlds, while Damwon are rookies this year.

#2 Upsets

This team is highly rated yes. However, they don’t seem to be unbeatable. Being the favorites in play-ins is good as long as you play well. If this team gets too overconfident or plays sloppy they won’t go anywhere. They are vulnerable to the upset. Especially against a couple regional champions like Flamingo and Royal Youth, who have dominated their regions.

I could also seem them not get out of group D if that’s where they end up. Invictus and Liquid are two teams that won’t make it easy, even for this highly rated team. They will be in a battle to claim a top-two spot and a quarterfinals spot.

#3 Elite Teams

Doing a 360, I think other more elite teams will get to send Damwon home from this tournament. I could see Fun Plus Phoenix, G2, Griffin, RNG and Fnatic as teams that could send them home empty-handed. They are the favorites and higher rated than Damwon, so they might just have a few more resources to pull from than Damwon and will advance over them should they meet in the quarterfinals, or later.

Damwon will be a team to watch for sure. An exciting highly rated team I think will entertain for sure. Even if they can’t win it all in 2019, I could see this team playing at a competitive evel for many years.
