League of Legends: Kled mid is overpowered on Patch 9.21
With the League of Legends ranked season coming to a close, we suggest you lock in Kled mid to pick up some last-minute LP!
From Orianna to Syndra to Azir, the mid lane champion pool has been overflowing with control mages and safe, long-range champions for years on end, but now it’s time for a change. As the tenth League of Legend ranked season looms, Kled is the man (or Yordle) to transform the mid lane meta forever.
Of course, these hyperbolic statements have been crafted to get your attention and excite you rather than explaining the current state of the mid lane, but they aren’t too far from the truth either. Kled currently sits at a 51.84% mid lane win rate, with a relatively small 0.3% pick rate, which suggests there is potential for the Cantankerous Cavalier to grow in popularity and begin dominating the center of the map in the near future.
Obviously, this isn’t some revolutionary strategy that Blog of Legends has crafted up to change the way you think about League of Legends forever. In fact, Kled mid has been a popular solo queue pick for some time now, and he’s also been drafted 16 times in pro play throughout 2019, including two picks at the World Championship from GAM Esports’ Kiaya.
So, what are we trying to convey with this guide? What’s different about Kled mid on Patch 9.21 than a previous iteration of the Yordle general? Admittedly, not a lot. But there are several reasons why we think he is overpowered on the current patch and will continue to wreak havoc during Preseason 2020.
Mid Lane Nerfs
November 10th, 2016. The last time Kled received a nerf from the balance team was almost three years ago, and in that time countless “meta” mid lane champions have been hit hard in patch after patch. But, to put a numerical value on it, since Kled’s last change on Patch 9.14, fifteen mid lane champs have been nerfed, pushing them lower on the mid lane tier list.
Needless to say, as other champions are nerfed, Kled’s power begins to rise in the mid lane conversation. And while he hasn’t received any changes in the lead up to Patch 9.21, many players would agree that with the Grievous Wounds addition on Patch 9.14, Kled is in a very solid state as of right now and can contest any champion in the middle lane.
Roaming Capabilities
Now onto the real reason why Kled is overpowered in the current meta.
Bottom lane 5v5s have been common for as long as we can all remember. A jungle gank, a mid lane roam, and a top lane Teleport for each team resulting in a chaotic bot lane team fight which puts one side in full control of the game. However, as the game has evolved and ADCs have become less powerful, the prevalence of chaotic bot fights has become smaller and smaller.
Nonetheless, the shift from late-game scaling to an early game focus over the last two seasons means being able to roam to either side lane remains paramount for a strong mid laner, and there are few ultimates more powerful than Kled’s Chaaaaaaaarge!!! when it comes to traversing the river to set up a gank. Wait for level 6, join up with your jungler, press R, and arrive at your destination in an instant.
Trading & Skirmish Power
Last, but not least, is Kled’s ability to win trades in a 1v1, dominate a 2v2, or dictate a larger early to mid-game skirmish.
If the counter-pick is available, Kled could single-handedly win a draft if placed into the right lane. His Jousting plus Bear Trap on a Rope combo means any target is in engage distance and can be caught out and pulled back almost immediately. Once locked into a fight, Kled’s Violent Tendencies will chunk the opponent’s HP bar, allowing for kill pressure or a burnt summoner spell.

Purchasing an early Tiamat allows Kled to quickly clear a minion wave and dip into fog of war, threatening to ride Skaarl to either side lane, while also supporting his jungler. If a 2v2 presents itself, Kled and his jungle partner are likely to win due to his excellent early game damage and annoying Passive, Skaarl the Cowardly Lizard, which basically gives him two health bars if utilized correctly.
All in all, Kled has the potential to take over the mid lane meta due to his long-range engage and roaming capabilities but is gated by being a melee champion. That being said, with enough experience on the champion, even the lowest elo mid laners can learn how to carry games with Kled and earn that much-needed LP before Season 9 ends.
We’ve seen Kled mid picked across the globe in pro play and solo queue, but players have yet to realize that he is, in fact, overpowered in the current meta. Whether the Yordle’s potential is realized on Patch 9.21 or at a later stage remains to be seen, but if you’re struggling for a mid pick in solo queue to help you fly up the ladder, you know where to look.
