We break down all the big changes coming to League of Legends in Patch 10.4!

League of Legends players are still learning how to optimize the re-reworked jungle after the Patch 10.3 experience buffs, so of course Riot had to throw another wrench in the plan by buffing Cinderhulk and Sunfire Cape! Patch 10.4 promises to add some brand new junglers to the roster as well (even if they aren’t the right ones), which should shake everything up. Here’s what happened in Patch 10.4 and what it all means.

Champions

Amumu

"Q – Bandage Toss DASH SPEED: 1350 after hitting an enemy >>> 1800 after hitting an enemy R – Curse of the Sad Mummy COOLDOWN: 150/130/110 seconds >>> 130/115/100 seconds [NEW] STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE: Now stops enemies in the middle of their dashes"

Amumu is never going to be viable in high elo or professional play, so the real measure of this buff is going to be on how much it affects his play in “normal” elos. Getting 20 seconds off his ult at rank one will certainly allow him to be more impactful in that mid game.

The extra dash speed and his ult now stopping enemies dashes are more aimed at making him stronger in higher elos, when players have quicker reflexes to flash/dash away from his ult. Unfortunately, he’s too easily punished early game for these buffs to matter.

Aphelios

"Passive – Weapons of the Faithful [NEW] WEAPON VIEW: Players can now see both guns Aphelios is holding next to his health bar"

Thank. You. God. This visual clarity should have been with Aphelios’s kit at launch and it’s honestly quite shameful that this change took this long.

"Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle [REM] BASIC ATTACK RESET: Aphelios no longer resets his attack timer right after consuming a mark (his attack timer still resets for the mark attack) Crescendum, the Chakram RED VS. BLUE: Aphelios’ sentry’s range indicators are now red for enemies when it’s inactive BASE NUMBER OF SENTRY ATTACKS: 4 >>> 3 (the number of attacks still scale with attack speed) SENTRY HEALTH AGAINST RANGED: Ranged basic attacks deal || 2 damage >>> 3 damage (Sentries have 6 health) SENTRY HEALTH AGAINST AOE: AoE attacks deal || 2 damage >>> 4 damage (Sentries have 6 health) SENTRY BUGFIX: Aphelios’ sentries no longer occasionally die upon being activated R – Moonlight Vigil RANGE: 1600 >>> 1300"

So nerfs to Aphelios’s most deadly gun combo of Calibrum and Crescendum, along with some visual clarity on which guns he has in his hands. Christmas has come early, and Santa also brought us a nerf to his ridiculous ult range. Hopefully, this will take Aphelios out of must-pick in the pro meta.

Aurelion Sol

"W – Celestial Expansion  ACTIVE STAR DAMAGE: Increases total damage by || 50% >>> 40%"

A lot of players are aghast that Aurelion Sol is getting nerfed considering his minuscule pick rate. However, he has been consistently strong on those players who have mained him, so I don’t necessarily hate Riot nerfing him in Patch 10.4.

Caitlyn

"Base Stats BONUS ATTACK SPEED: 10% at level 1 >>> 20% at level 1"

Riot says Caitlyn’s sitting in a weak spot in the current meta, but we’ve seen her get some play in the professional scene and she’s consistently been near the top of the ADC tier lists in Season 10. Don’t be shocked to see her in the A+ or S tier in Patch 10.4 after these buffs.

Garen

"Q – Decisive Strike EMPOWERED BASIC ATTACK DAMAGE RATIO: 0.4 attack damage >>> 0.5 attack damage W – Courage [NEW] BLOOD OF MY ENEMIES: At max resistances from enemy kills, Garen increases his bonus armor and magic resist by 10% SHIELD: 0.1 maximum health >>> 70/95/120/145/170 (+0.2 bonus health)"

These buffs are on top of the changes aimed at making Garen jungle viable, so we’ll discuss those changes further down. However, these changes will not only help jungle Garen but also top lane Garen. The bonus armor and MR at max Courage stacks, particularly, is going to help him scale incredibly well in Patch 10.4.

Gnar

"Base Stats MOVEMENT SPEED: 325 >>> 335 Passive – Rage Gene BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED: 10-30 (levels 1-18) in Mini Gnar form >>> 0-20 (levels 1-18) in Mini Gnar form R – GNAR! DAMAGE RATIO: 0.2 attack damage, 0.5 ability power >>> 0.5 attack damage, 1.0 ability power"

Wouldn’t be Riot without some more Gnar buffs! Now they’re going to make the little gnome faster even when he’s not in Mini Gnar form from those base MS buffs. In addition, the change in his GNAR! damage profile (making it scale better with AD) could actually be massive with how Gnar tends to build those bruiser items.

Jayce

"Base Stats  MANA: 357.2 >>> 375 MANA GROWTH: 37 >>> 45 Q – To the Skies! BASE DAMAGE: 45/80/115/150/185/220 >>> 55/95/135/175/215/255"

Somewhere, Hashinshin screams to the heavens and a smile creeps across my face. I don’t think these changes, especially the To the Skies! damage are completely out of order, but I do think the mana changes could be big for Jayce. With games being as long as they are, I don’t think he’ll be as strong as he once was but it’s nice to see Riot give my boy some love.

Lux

"Q – Light Binding BASE DAMAGE: 70/115/170/205/250 >>> 80/125/170/215/260 DAMAGE RATIO: 0.7 ability power >>> 0.6 ability power COOLDOWN: 13/12/10/11/9 seconds >>> 11/10.5/10/9.5/9 seconds R – Final Spark [NEW] FLASHDANCE :: Lux can now Flash while casting Final Spark"

The buffs are aimed at support Lux which is why she’s getting extra damage and lower cooldowns on her Light Binding. It would make her an annoying support if anyone played mage supports. Unfortunately, the Gargoyle Stoneplate-loving tank supports are likely to remain strong, and they can eat Lux up. Allowing her to Flash while ulting could be very interesting, though.

Rammus

"Base Stats ATTACK SPEED: 0.625 >>> 0.656 ATTACK SPEED RATIO: 0.625 >>> 0.656"

Unlike before, I expect Rammus to be OK in Patch 10.4. Not good, just OK.

Singed

"Base Stats HEALTH: 610 >>> 580 ARMOR: 37 >>> 34"

Did someone on the balance team lose to a Singed in their promos, because this makes no sense. Singed has been a middling pick in the top lane for a while now, with basically no professional play. The meta in solo queue, which is all fighters, can destroy him or wait to outscale him. Singed shouldn’t be, and hasn’t been, good in League of Legends for a while now, so heavy nerfs like this make no sense.

Sona

"Q – Hymn of Valor [NEW] MANA RESTORE: Sona now gains 30 mana the first time she tags an ally with her aura COST: 50/55/60/65/70 mana >>> 75/80/85/90/95 mana W – Aria of Perseverance [NEW] MANA RESTORE: Sona now gains 30 mana the first time she tags an ally with her aura COST: 80/85/90/95/100 mana >>> 105/110/115/120/125 mana E – Song of Celerity [NEW] MANA RESTORE: Sona now gains 30 mana the first time she tags an ally with her aura COST: 65 mana >>> 90 mana"

Tl;dr is that all her basic abilities’ mana costs went up, but she recovers mana if she casts her spells near allies. Basically, support Sona should be untouched while top lane Sona is heavily nerfed. The fact that this abomination became a strong top laner is more an indictment about how weak the top lane champion pool is that no one can stop her than anything.

Soraka

"Base Stats HEALTH: 529.04 >>> 535 HEALTH GROWTH: 78 >>> 74 MANA: 350.8 >>> 375 MANA GROWTH: 60 >>> 40 ATTACK DAMAGE: 50.04 >>> 50 Q – Starcall SELF-HEAL: 60/80/100/120/140 (+0.5 ability power) >>> 40/50/60/70/80 (+0.3 ability power) REJUVENATION HEAL DURATION: 5 seconds >>> 2.5 seconds COST: 40/45/50/55/60 mana >>> 60/65/70/75/80 mana BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED: 15/20/25/30/35% >>> 10/12.5/15/17.5/20% W – Astral Infusion  [NEW] ME AFTER A MASSAGE AND ICE CREAM: While Soraka is Rejuvenated, the 10% maximum health cost for casting Astral Infusion will be reduced by 40/55/70/85/100% HEAL: 80/110/140/170/200 >>> 80/115/150/185/220"

All these changes not only knock her out of the top lane, but they also cripple her in the support role, where she was strong, but not ridiculously so. Please fix top lane Riot before we see zero-CS Zilean top come back.

Sylas

"Q – Chain Lash BASE DAMAGE: 40/55/70/85/100 >>> 40/60/80/100/120"

Oh goodie, Sylas is getting buffed. 10 damage at rank three can be pretty significant, but I don’t think it pushes him high into the meta.

Udyr

"Passive – Monkey’s Agility [NEW] STING LIKE A BEE: Udyr now gets 5% off his global cooldown (the time between when he can switch stances) per Cloud Drake buff"

Thanks for remembering Udyr is a champion Riot, but 5% off the tiny cooldown between stances does nothing for him. Give him a gap close or extra movement speed. Something.
