The LCS and LEC will both return this week with games played online.

Relax esports fans, there is no reason to panic and wring your hands. Riot Games announced today that both the LCS and LEC will be returning to action this weekend. Games will be played online, meaning that each team will play from their own gaming house or studio with Riot Games personnel on-site to monitor the integrity of the matches.

Both leagues will transition to a fully-remote setup going forward, which will inevitably cause several disruptions to the broadcast (I would guess that the casters will also be casting remotely and not from the LCS/LEC studios, but that could be wrong). Of course, the casters will not have the advantage of seeing what the teams are doing and having the infrastructure in place to get quick updates on things like pauses, which could slow down and hinder the broadcast even more.

The two leagues will be broadcasting remotely “for the remainder of the Spring Split” though it remains to be seen if that will apply to the playoff matches as well or if this just applies to the regular season. It’s important to note that both the LCS and LEC had moved their playoff series to their home studios in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, so if the series are played live I would anticipate they would still be played at the LCS/LEC studios.

One other interesting note from LCS Commissioner Chris Greeley is that there will be major changes to the LCS and Academy (who will also be shifting to remote play) schedules. The Academy Rush broadcast on Friday night will be canceled going forward and Riot will cease the Monday Night League Broadcast. It remains to be seen if this change will be permanent given the show’s lack-luster viewership.
