LCS: Which Team You Should Root for Based on the Major Sports
By Josh Tyler
If you are a sports fan displaced by the cancellation of the major sports and are looking to get into the LCS, we can help you pick the best team to root for.
Fans of the NHL, NBA, and MLB are understandably depressed by the cancellation of most of the major sports leagues. For the time being, sports fans are itching for competition with nothing on television to satiate their lust for competition. That’s where League of Legends and the LCS comes in.
You see, although the COVID-19 pandemic did cause a brief delay to the season, the League of Legends professional league in North America, LCS, has returned to play and is actually entering the playoffs week after next. If you’re a casual League player who needs the distraction of the pro leagues or a beleaguered sports fan desperate for something like sports to watch, we’re here to help.
Based on your favorite sports teams, we will help you pick the LCS team that would most appeal to you. Apologies in advance, we’ll only be doing the four major sports leagues in North America (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) so NASCAR and soccer fans will have to make their own way.

Team Liquid
They’re the defending (four-time) LCS champions, a team full of international superstars, but they’re vastly underperforming this year. While they used to be a team down on their luck, all this winning has made their fans, team, and owner a little too big for their britches.
A lot of fans and pundits think they might miss the playoffs. And most of the other fans around the league are perfectly fine with that. What can I say, continued success breeds jealousy?
Root for them if you’re a fan of the… Golden State Warriors, Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots
TSM
Everyone knows this team, their fans travel en mass everywhere, and they’re always fancying themselves contending team even in their “down” years. That is because this team is always, aggressively, spending money and trying to win. TSM never “rebuilds” they just reload.
There is no ambivalence towards TSM, you either love them or despise them and their fans. And their fans are some of the most obnoxious (or passionate) in the LCS.
Root for them if you’re a fan of the… New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Lakers
Cloud9
They’re always good, if not spectacular, but very rarely great. They also have a nasty tendency of not being able to get the job done in the LCS playoffs (even though they will do quite well at the World Championships) and losing to teams like TSM or Liquid in heart-breaking fashion.
You’ll never meet a Cloud9 fan who isn’t a bit funny or self-deprecating. They’re always happy, but they’re also always frantically nervous about how the whole thing can come crumbling down. But they can (and have) won on rare occasion and other teams’ fans are usually happy when they do.

FlyQuest
Plucky, upstart, a team that rarely breaks the bank in the offseason but always finds itself right in the thick of things late into the season. Their team always seems to be one of destiny right up until the bottom falls out.
The fans have little-to-no expectations of the team and are happier to enjoy themselves, the experience, and each other than to get their hopes up. It’s probably better that way.
Root for them if you’re a fan of the… Oakland Athletics, Carolina Hurricanes, Green Bay Packers, Indiana Pacers
Immortals
This is the team that goes out every offseason and spends big. Sometimes it bans out alright and they make it deep into the playoffs, but most times it doesn’t and they flame out before they even make the finals.
They have one of those fanbases that seem to be perpetually embarassed to be fans of this team. They’ll come out and show their support if the team is winning but otherwise they’re usually hiding their IMT jerseys.
Root for them if you’re a fan of the…Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Mets
Dignitas
They’re an old-school org with a lot of tradition and that’s really all they have to go off. Their teams have always had a personality, which didn’t always go hand-in-hand with winning.
These fans are the ones who are a bit obsessed with the greats of the past more than the prospects of the future. That tends to be because there hasn’t been a lot of success recently to get excited about.
Root for them if you’re a fan of the…Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Celtics
CLG
We swear this team hasn’t always been completely terrible. At one point, they were one of the prides of the league. But now that seems like an ancient myth.
At this point, this team’s fans are openly in revolt against management for what they have done to this once-proud franchise. Fans of other teams don’t even hate their fans, they just pity them.

Evil Geniuses
As a relatively new organization, their recent surge following a slow start to the season has been encouraging to the few fans that they do have. While they existed in the LCS briefly a few years back, they’re not a team with too much history to fall back on.
As for the fans, they’re really a bit of the underground, hipster types. Their fanbase has been built by their team’s identity and marketing as the “villains” of the LCS, appealing to those fans without a permanent home.
Root for them if you’re a fan of the…Houston Astros, Vegas Golden Knights, Baltimore Ravens, Milwaukee Bucks
100 Thieves
Another newer organization, they have a bit more history of actual success but they somehow just don’t seem to make a big enough impact on the league to ever matter. Like they’re never bad enough or good enough to be noteworthy. When you’re naming teams in the LCS, 100 Thieves is the one that you struggle to remember.
While the team is middling, the organization behind them has a lot of hype with big streamers signed to their flag, sweet merch, and a lot of swag. That has engendered them to a lot of very passionate fans, even if their fanbase is among the smaller ones.
Root for them if you’re a fan of the…Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Wild, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Mariners
Golden Guardians
They’ve always been a team that doesn’t spend a lot of money and as a result, they haven’t much if any success in the LCS. They’re always at the bottom of the standings, the butt of most of the league’s jokes.
This has created a very insular, yet loyal, group of fans. Most of the fans are pretty easy-going with regards to their team’s misfortune but a few are a bit prickly.
