We break down how to build an unbeatable Master Yi and the best comps he fits into in TFT.

With the most recent meta being one that is so stale, I’ve taken a bit of a break from ranked (Diamond is right within my grasp) to have some fun with unconventional comps on my smurf. In my break, I’ve found a few unconventional comps that I think could allow you to win TFT games easily and are based around unconventional units and picks. Today, I’ll be talking about a comp based around Master Yi, breaking down the best items for Yi, and describing the comps that he can fit in best, including the one I’ve been running I call “slice and dice.”

One disclaimer I’d like to give before diving into this guide is that these comps are inherently more risky than the ones we list as S tier in our tier list because they require very specific conditions to hit their max effectiveness. If you do not hit on these specific items and hit enough units, Master Yi gets outclassed by the higher-tier units and comps. Only go for this comp when you hit these very specific conditions.

Why Yi?

Master Yi is currently one of the most underrated carry units in the game and synergizes incredibly well with some of the strongest items in the game. Attack speed items like Guinsoo’s Rageblade and on-hit items like Last Whisper and Giant Slayer are currently some of the strongest in the game, and Yi can take advantage of that.

In addition, Yi’s passive, which grants him true damage for five seconds and a heal, allows him to absolutely shred through enemy tanks. The sustain also allows him to be nearly unkillable, meaning that he’s not reliant on an item like Guardian Angel should he get chunked early in a fight.

The Build

Must-Have Items: Rapidfire Cannon, Quicksilver Sash

To make Master Yi the unkillable, constantly slicing and dicing carry, you need to have a Rapidfire Cannon. This gives Master Yi extra range, allowing him to auto attack from a much safer distance, while also giving him more attack speed to proc his passive (which grants true damage on his basic attacks for five seconds while active). This item also allows you to position Yi a bit more conservatively to avoid getting instantly killed by frontline enemies like Irelia.

Another must-have item on Yi is Quicksilver Sash. This prevents Yi from being crowd controlled for the first ten seconds of battle, allowing him to deal his damage and stack up his passive.

Other Ideal Items: Guinsoo’s Rageblade

Ideally, you will round out the build with a Guinsoo’s so that Yi can stack up his attack speed, getting the passive up and more true damage attacks more quickly.

Alternative Items: Runaan’s Hurricane, Rabadon’s Deathcap

Runaan’s is a great item on Master Yi because it applies his damage (including his true damage when his passive is up) to multiple enemies when he basic attacks. This is an ideal build if you can’t find a Needlessly Large Rod.

However, if you do have a rod but no other Recurve Bows, Rabadon’s Deathcap is another good item. It allows you to boost Master Yi’s true damage and healing, making him even harder to kill.

Best Comps

Chrono/Blademasters: Master Yi, Riven, Shen, Thresh, Blitzcrank, Wukong, Twisted Fate

If you want a comp that is all about juicing up Yi, Chronos probably give him the best synergy outside of his own. This comp gives you three Blademasters and six Chronos so that Yi is always getting that attack speed ramp. This is also a great comp if you don’t get a Guinsoo’s on Yi.

Celestial/Blademasters: Master Yi, Yasuo, Xayah, Riven, Shen, Irelia, Lulu

Blademasters and Celestials are a naturally synergistic comp, so this variation gives Yi additional sustain. It also allows you to add Lulu to your comp, who is still one of the strongest units in the game.

Rebels/Blademasters: Master Yi, Yasuo, Master Yi, Jinx, Malphite, Aurelion Sol

Finally, there is the comp that is probably going to be your go-to when running a Yi comp. The 6 Rebel/3 Blademaster comp is going to maximize the effectiveness of Master Yi, giving him that full shield from Rebels while also getting the extra auto attack out of Blademasters.
