3 Word Recaps

*The winning team is in bold

Game 1: FlyQuest vs. DRX – Lets FLY home

With this loss, FlyQuest was all but eliminated from Worlds 2020 (they would need heavy favorites Top Esports to lose all their remaining games and then win a tiebreaker). This all-but secured that North America would not be advancing out of the group stage for the second year in a row.

Game 2: Unicorns of Love vs. Top Esports – Unicorns are kill

This game was an absolute stomp, with UOL being down over 6k gold at the 15-minute mark. With their win, TES and DRX officially advanced to the quarterfinals while FlyQuest and UOL were eliminated.

Game 3: DRX vs. Unicorns of Love – Closest one-sided game

I mean, this was just a perfect description. DRX owned the game from the start, but man did UOL keep making plays to keep the game entertaining. This was maybe the best game of Day 8.

Game 4: Top Esports vs. FlyQuest – NA gets redemption

Considering that the region has now failed to escape groups for the second-straight year and their top seed had failed miserably, NA fans were understandably anxious for something positive to talk about. Luckily, on the last day they had their teams playing, FlyQuest gave them a glimmer of hope by knocking off the tournament favorites.

Game 5: – Unicorns of Love vs. FlyQuest – FLY-ing to 3-3

FlyQuest finished the group stage with a 3-3 record, matching the record of Team Liquid in Group A. That means that NA went a cool 6-6 in the group stage of Worlds 2020 (wow that was a heck of a fall, really hit your head hard…what?…0-6 in groups?…TSM?…no man that’s a crazy dream).

Game 6: DRX vs. Top Esports – Boring early game

In the last game of the group stage, DRX and TES faced off for the #1 seed of the group. It was…not that exciting. There wasn’t a kill for the first 23 minutes of the game, breaking the record for the latest first blood in a Worlds game ever.

MVPs of Group Stage Day 8

Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon (DRX, Jungle)

He had two fantastic performances in DRX’s wins over FlyQuest and Unicorns of Love, including a monster 11/3/8 Graves game against UOL. In the other game, a 2/1/7 Lillia win against FlyQuest, he had almost a 1,000 gold lead at 15 minutes.

Hung “Karsa” Hao-Hsuan (Top Esports, Jungle)

Three Graves games for Karsa today and a combined 12/4/15 KDA helped to lift TES to the #1 seed in the group.

Tristan “PowerOfEvil” Schrage (FlyQuest, Mid)

I hope that next year NA fans will start to put some more respect into PoE’s performance, because he showed that he is capable of being a world-class mid laner today. His 11/1/2 on Vayne against UOL was impressive, but honestly his 3/0/10 game on Azir was more impressive to me. He went toe-to-toe with one of the best mids at Worlds, Knight, and helped lead FlyQuest to an upset.
