The 2020 World Championship has reached the semi-finals. The top four League of Legends rosters in the world are ready to do battle on the Shanghai stage, but what can we expect from these teams? What should viewers keep their eye on heading into this weekend’s Worlds games?

Rematches

Rematches are a major theme heading into the semi-finals. The first matchup is between G2 Esports and DAMWON Gaming, a rematch of the 2019 World Championship quarter-finals in which G2 were the victors en route to the final.

DAMWON, however, have made several changes for the 2020 season which have taken them from the LCK’s third-placed team in 2019 to their number one seed this year. DAMWON have also emerged as a major Worlds contender and are widely considered favorites to take down G2 this time around.

This is definitely a rematch to be excited for in the semi-finals.

The second semi-final is an LPL 2020 Summer Split semi-final rematch between Suning and Top Esports in which the former cleanly swept their opponents 3-0. Top also hold a 4-0 regular season record against Suning during the LPL this year. Will Suning end that streak in the Worlds semi-final?

Should G2 Esports and Suning both win their series this weekend, it would set up a rematch between the two teams from Group A. This would mark the first time two teams from the same group reached the final since 2018.

LPL vs. Everyone Else

Chinese teams continue to dominate at Worlds. Teams from the LPL make up two of the final four teams at the World Championship and is guaranteed to have a team reach the final for the third consecutive year.

The other semi-final will see Europe and Korea do battle in a heated LEC vs. LCK match. G2 are eager to redeem themselves after failing to clinch the Worlds trophy in 2019, falling to FunPlus Phoenix in the final. While DAMWON want to help bring another title back to the LCK, re-establishing the region as the best in the world.

Caps and JackeyLove

There’s plenty of debate surrounding the prestige of these two players heading into the semi-finals with the community arguing endlessly about where they stand in the “top 10 players of all-time” list.

Caps has reached back-to-back World Championship finals without winning the tournament, a key factor holding him back from the top five. JackeyLove is hoping to become a two-time world champion with two different teams, one of the rarest accolades in League of Legends.

It pays to be #1

G2 Esports, DAMWON Gaming, and Top Esports all qualified for the 2020 World Championship as their region’s number one seed making this year’s semi-finals a true test of strength between the world’s three strongest competitive regions.
